The Official FIFA World Cup 2022 Megathread

They're going to bang on about bloody Ronaldo constantly in every Portugal game.

If he's on the bench (stop laughing) then the camera will forever be panning to him.

Normally I really look forward to World Cups. First one in my lifetime Wales have qualified for and I am completely ambivalent about the whole fucking thing. Not even sure I will bother watching.
I fully expect y'all to beat us on a Bale wondergoal in 2nd half stoppage.

I thought you were around for the last one?

This one ramps the level up way beyond what I am prepared to tolerate. I was also around in 1978, but wasn't overly political in my feelings at 6.

Whole tournament can just fuck off for me.

If we do, we do. It's being held at a stupid time in a hell hole of a country that I despise, won entirely by corruption. So I don't really care.
I know this isn't particularly helpful, but Qatar aren't unique in that.

Definitely leaves a bad taste, though.

I'm not sure that's true Alan, I can't think of a World Cup that was given where somebody couldn't make a case for it.

There is no case at all for this and is pure corruption.
I know we don't see eye-to-eye on matters of economics, so my counterpoint probably doesn't hold a lot of water for you, but...

There is no ethical consumption under capitalism, etc, etc. Not that we need to open that can of worms here.

There is nothing ethical about persecuting the LGBTQ+ community for simply existing
There is nothing ethical about employing slave labour and killing thousands to build the stadiums for this
There is nothing ethical about FIFA now sending communications to the teams to "concentrate on the football" as they are worried the wankers they are in hock to might get a bit upset.

There's sporting integrity, there's sustainability and there's (theoretically at least) the fan experience that are all considerations though. Even if we ignore that they promised a World Cup when it's normally held and couldn't do it.

Plonking the centrepiece of world football into a desert nation covering the metropolitan area of Leeds which isn't even vaguely set up to accommodate the supporters is ridiculous, before you even get into the ethics of Qatari culture and geopolitical issues, as well as how brazenly corrupt the process has already been proven to be.

Of course I'll still watch it, but it's very likely to be my second-least favourite World Cup ever. South Africa 2010 will never be usurped.

Lots of live football I’m off Monday and working from home Tuesday so I’ll get to watch the first 8 games.
Just seems odd building up to a World Cup in colder weather and dark nights.

It's because that's the one that got me into the sport, isn't it

I’m torn on the Raul situation.

On one hand, this is his last chance at a World Cup so I can’t exactly blame him for prioritising it, especially after what he’s been through. On the other hand, he is paid a lot of money every week to be a Wolverhampton Wanderers player which, for whatever reason, he hasn’t had a lot of interest in recently.

I’d still be pleased for him if he played and scored though.

I can forgive you for a lot of things. Backing up that catshit custard of a tournament is a step too far. Pound-for-pound some of the worst football I've ever seen.

Anybody under any illusion of the distance between the grounds a quick look on Google earth will highlight how tightly packed all the locations are.
Absolutely nothing on the west side of the peninsula.
Been to Qatar in the mid 00’s in my RAF days if you’d have said it would hold a World Cup in 20 years back then I’d have laughed.

Amazing to think how different my life would be right now if Xabi Alonso circa 2010 wasn't so damn fine.

Hot days and the nights are still warm this time of year in the gulf still easily get temperatures around mid 30’s late 20’s is usually the norm though.
Evenings are still barmy in the early 20’s doesn’t cool until late December/ January even then that’s a good summers day here.
Any fans doing a long haul out there will genuinely struggle with boredom. It’s bad enough when you’re working out there let alone trying to fill days alongside 2million extra tourists. I assume they’ve taken this into account.

They haven't, there is fuck all to do.

Also, top accommodation.
