The Official FIFA World Cup 2022 Megathread

what's weird about wanting to see more exciting football be played

euros 24 lets goooooo

edit - and the most exciting thing about it? no messi/ronaldo comms
So that you can half the time that you laugh at an England penalty miss? šŸ˜‰

Having witnessed first hand Kane diving, backing dangerously into players, hacking Traore down and thinking heā€™s the ref in every game weā€™ve had with Spurs I wonā€™t be shedding any tears for him.

I messaged my lad in the middle of the second half and asked: ā€œEngland win or a win at Everton?ā€ and Iā€™m pleased to report he replied ā€œEvertonā€! A pack of Wolves matters more than a pride of lions.
Think I'm in the minority but I'd have absolutely rather seen England win this game than us beat Everton. Winning matches at a World Cup means far more than a Premier League win.

I'm pleased we can leave the tournament with our heads held high. I thought we were great tonight, we just did not get the breaks.

Football is a fucking bitch sometimes. We didn't deserve to lose.

So frustrating, so gutting. Proud of them all - I don't think we could have given any more.

I'll hold my hands up I thought as soon as we come up against a contender we'd retreat into our shells and the Croatia/Italy games would play out.

We haven't done that, we've had a real go at the French but we really needed to score a second in that period we had the French rattled when Maguire and Sako went close.

You can't mitigate for the penalty miss. That will haunt Kane hopefully it fires him up for the Euro's. I've just said elsewhere he still plays a bit too deep for me, its all very Afobe under Jackett in 2016. In the first half he pinned and rolled tje French centre backs and the one CH (Upemecano?) was a liability, I dont think we made him nearly as uncomfortable as we could have.

Disappointed but not angry or too down about things.

Theyā€™re unrelated so not a binary choice but I certainly donā€™t feel anywhere near as bad as I did after losing to Watford in the semifinal.

Very disappointing but Iā€™d rather go out like that than the pretty negative displays that have seen us eliminated from the last 2 tournaments. You usually need a slice of luck to win a World Cup and, once again, it deserted us.

Right then. On to Lopetegui keeping us up. Julen! Julen!

Looking good going forward. Only lose Walker, Trippier and Henderson from this group with plenty coming through.

I despise Kane I've said it on here on numerous occasions including earlier today, but when it's playing for England I want him to do well. I struggle to see why an English person wouldn't. The Everton vs France decision isn't binary. Wolves staying up or an England World Cup win would be a simple choice for me, but one has zero baring on the other. France aren't any better than us and will probably go on and win the tournament. Its an opportunity lost

Ah well at least Wolves are doing well, no criticism tonight as I said I think destined as an England fan to say ā€œwhyā€™s it always someone elseā€

The fashion in which we lost that match means it was one of the worst feelings possible so a bad barometer! Watford was probably the most devastated I've been after a match, next couple would be England losing the semi-final and final before Sevilla.

Ultimately Wolves haven't gotten far in a knockout competition very often and I'm also too young to have seen Wolves win anything. So England winning something is most likely the only time I'll see a team I support win a trophy.

I find it odd how you can just turn off the fact you hate him. I can't do that which is why I've not ever been able to properly get into international football. Can't just turn off my feelings towards someone because the put an England top on.

It honestly makes me sad how ambivalent some of you are toward the international side of the game.

Thereā€™s a lot of joy to be had by throwing in with a little well-meaning sport jingoism.

Itā€™s probably a reflection of the much less prominent view of ā€˜nationalismā€™ outside US. Even with all the Brexit shite etc here (most) people would still find it deeply weird singing the national anthem at school or worshiping a flag.
