The Official Euro 2016 Megathread

I suppose the most frustrating thing is that there is debate after every tournament. Maybe too much pressure is put on the players shoulders, but for whatever reason we seem to be fairly average and predictable at tournaments. Though last night set a new low.

Not that there was too much pressure in them this time - don't think the media or country was expecting them to win it merely perform well, probably at least get to the quarters (which we clearly should) any more than that would be a bonus.

The FA might have put pressure on Hodgson the get to a certain point, but not sure he would have agreed to a contract extension anyway (unless we had won the tournament)

Can't believe that Kenny Jackett didn't make that list

He would have been proud of last nights England performance, left back hopeless, holding midfield player without passing options, ten position vacated by a runner. wide midfield half hearted, Centre forward shot shy.

As I said last night, our shape made no sense. In what world is that a suitable shape, you've got two full backs who are picked solely because they bomb on and a midfield three containing one striker and one number ten. Poor old Eric Dier.

Just viewed a video on the Sky Sports app of the players bumbling out of their 5* hotel and in to the team bus. Some of them smiling, shaking hands and waving. Others with a more stern look on their face - but ultimately, ALL of them looking totally relaxed - where as poor Roy gets dragged out in to a press conference and stuck in front of the cameras to take the medias collective bullet.

I've also read how "senior" England players had "lost faith" in Roy's ability to take us to the latter stages of the tournament. I'm sorry - but what the actual fuck does that mean? How easy is it to say "we lost faith in the manager" after they've just lost 2-1 to Iceland?! And even if there was an element of truth in that, the players themselves should still have more than enough ability to go out and beat the likes of Russia, Slovakia & Iceland. I hope that's not true because it's a disgrace if it is.

Roy will ultimately go down as another who has tried and failed as England manager - but a gentlemen he most definitely is and the players need to have a long, hard look at themselves over the next few weeks.

Agree - regardless of the Manager there were enough reasonably experienced internationals out there to have dealt with that regardless of whether they had confidence in Hodgson or not.

Will forgive (a little) the players with few caps & no previous tournament experience at senior level as they will have been taking their lead from the senior players

I don't think it is a disgrace Jinky. This exit and the way we played in all 4 games showed Hodgson wasn't up to the job and never really has been. His basic formations lost their way in the friendlies before the tournament and the systems within those formations fell apart completely.

Raph Honigstein has written a good article on the ESPN app about this and I agree with him wholeheartedly. Too often players are just shoved on the pitch and told to perform. And that's just amateurish if true. Although to get basic marking wrong at a throw-in or not be able to play attack v defence effectively or throwing 4 forwards on and ask them to play without any practice is criminal for any international coach.

Antonio Conte and Michael O'Neill have both proved that if you go out there with a plan then the most limited players can do well, not just defend but go and win. Hodgson et al never provided that.

Hodgson and Neville have got what they deserve and those senior players will now be cast into the international wilderness and rightly so. This is as bad a day since last Friday.

After twice refusing to do a press conference today Hodgson finally did one grudgingly, opening with the words "I don't know what I'm doing here..."

So the £5m pa England manager didn't think the u who spent a fortune following them deserved an explanation? He was whinging about people not knowing how he feels

What explanation could he have given that would have placated anyone? Trivial nonsense.

He could've said what he thought went wrong from his side and from the players side. He could've thrown the senior players not willing to play ball under the bus, he could've said his preparation involved x and y and they prepared for x and y. In then end it shows that he had nothing to say and whilst he is a nice guy it shows his limitations as a manager of a football team that he can't see what went wrong or what he thought he was doing right was just not implemented by his players.

Plenty to say.

No one is ever going to slate the players like that, it's unrealistic.

I could understand that if you were an international manager and thought there were jobs out there after the contract you could do. But there isn't for Roy, I think this was his last hurrah. He could've gone out with a bang as he has absolutely nothing to lose.

This is probably the one chance that somebody could actually slate players and FA bods and get away with it.

This was the press being cunts again for me. He's gone. No need to drag him through the shit to try and get some wanky headline. That wasn't "for the fans" in any shape or form. It was for the fucking headline tomorrow.

English press are a fucking disgrace.
