The Official Euro 2016 Megathread

Do you appoint a strong character like Capello again then the players sulk and you don't get their best, or someone like southgate who for me like hodgson will essentially let the players do as they like (Kane taking corners)

Shearer banging his own drum for manager on 5Live this morning. And if the FA aren't brave enough for that, he'd back a Southgate/Hoddle double act.

He was on MOTD last night as well putting himself up for the job

Last manager to get something out of an England side was Terry Venables who was neither of those character types.

Some countries would kill just to have qualified in the last ten years, tbf.

Yes but you can't compare one countries expectations to another whilst qualifying for ie Northern Ireland is seen as an achievement it's the absolute bare minimum for England.
The thing that angers most of us is how bad we performed no matter how well Iceland played England should have enough to beat them if they perform to any sort of level.

That's just his chums Brazil, Wilkins and Redknapp

Yep...No Holland this time round. I was just waiting for it to all go wrong, not surprised and will now happily move on. I'm hardened to this kind of ineptitude after going to watch Wolves home and some away last season.

Roy gone, Neville gone and that should be it for Rooney.
Thanks for the goals Wayne but you are no longer one of the top 4 forwards in the country and you sure as hell ain't one of the top six midfielders in the country! You have all the leadership qualities of a field mouse and England need quick, sharp passing to progress, not "Hollywood balls".

Henderson should never get near an England squad again and Hart needs dropping...He needs to spend less time worrying about his head and shoulders and sort his bloody weak wrists out.

i think Holland lost to Iceland home and away in qualifying and didn't score against them!

Walker had his least effective game last night for us - I don't know if that's Iceland doing a much better job on him than Russia or Wales or because Sturridge was there wasting his space, but that was a major major negative for us. We'd have been better with Walker where Sturridge was and Clyne at right back. For me Sturridge plays upfront or he doesn't start and you bring him off the bench as an impact player.

The team didn't gel for reasons too numerous to go through. 4 goals in 4 games - direct free kick, defensive mistake, a penalty and only one goal from open play and that in the last minute of a match. We found it very difficult to break down any team with a defensive set up - didn't have the tactics, team selection or intelligence to do it unfortunately.

As Bilic said, should have played the team intended for the 2nd round in the Slovakia game. More because yesterday they seemed not to know how to play together and any extra game time may have helped (I doubt it but you never know).

Wow - that has to be the worst performance and most embarrassing result I have ever seen from an England side. I don't know where to start with it TBH. One thing though, stuff like 'this has been coming' is just an empty soundbite. Because it hasn't 'been coming'. Fine, we've been toothless upfront which is where we were supposed to be strongest, but aside from a Joe Hart fuckup which again you'd not expect him to repeat, there was nothing I could have foreseen to prepare me for that disgrace.

For me, it all stemmed from that equaliser. A total failure to do the most basic of requirements - it completely ripped any kind of confidence in the side, we panicked like crazy when Iceland were 40 yards away from our goal, and whenever the ball went out of play for a thrown (a fucking THROW IN for fucks sake) we looked about as comfortable as Glasgowolf at a SNP conference. With the confidence also went any kind of gameplan - not a single player seemed to have any idea what they were supposed to do.

Individuals? Bloody hell, with the exception of a bright cameo from Rashford, every single one of them had an absolute nightmare. The centre halves were dreadful - Cahill has zero organisational/leadership skills, Walker negated by the showboating lummox playing in front of him (more on Sturridge later). Dier - our best player in the group stages - forgot how to pass the thing 5 yards, Rooney had a shocker and failed to act as the leader he should be, Sterling was better than he was v Wales, so his overall contribution can be upgraded to mere 'crap', but the two crowning turds in the waterpipe were Kane and Sturridge. Kane did his best to emulate Kevin Francis, with free kicks that reminded me of that Peter Kay advert for John Smiths. Fucking abominable - why was he on the free kicks?! His body language was atrocious as well. As for Sturridge - the last player I went that mental at was probably Steve Corica. He could almost be congratulated for choosing the wrong option EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. He simply does not have a footballing brain. Actually, remove the word 'footballing' from that last sentence. The booking he picked up showed how utterly moronic he is.

I'm thoroughly pissed off - the players threw Hodgson under a bus with that lack of effort, application, passion etc etc etc. It was bereft of pretty much everything you need to win a game of football, especially against a team who are just that - a team.

It's absolutely essential that whoever takes over is able to get that lot playing together, and not for themselves. That's not going to be easy. I hope they take their time with this appointment because we DO have a good nucleus, we've got more promising youngsters coming through and I don't want a substandard manager with zero coaching ability brought in. I don't care if the next coach is foreign either TBH, there is SOMETHING there to build on but right now, those players have badly let their country down.

You could have put together a team of journeymen cloggers from lower prem and upper champ and they would have almost certainly have out-performed that side last night.

Gareth Southgate early favourite which for me would be a huge mistake, has done the bare minimum with U21 who were dreadful in last Euro u21 tournament.
Just comes across as big yes man, only English of the top of my head is Eddie Howe but huge step up from a low pressured job at Bournemouth to England.

Pardew would be a possible. If you could get his honeymoon period to tie in with the start of a tournament you would probably win it...

There is a dearth of even vaguely appealing candidates, be they English or otherwise. And this is one of, if not the, highest paid job in international football. You could try and bung money at someone established at that level, but lets face it, you aren't going to entice Joachim Loew to join up.

Wenger is out of contract in the summer, but he is on £6m a year at Arsenal. Could England match that? At least you would have the team playing attractive stuff and he commands respect.

Howe is just completely inexperienced. I can't see the FA going down that route.

Bad feeling they'll fall into the same trap as when they appointed McLaren and appoint Southgate. This is the same FA that sees it fit to employ Aidy Boothroyd as U20 coach.

i don't know enough but based on some of the decision making and crap positioning taken up by the players yesterday, i agree with Langers that they need someone who can coach them.

in fact we need 2 decent coaches, one for the main team and one to devote 100% of his time to sturridge

We've tried the experienced foreign coaches, we've tried the most qualified and experienced English Coach and we've tried the English flavour of the month as coach. None of them have got us anywhere.

We may as well go left field and appoint a former player with little or no managerial experience. Can it get any worse? I doubt it. I would have had Gary Neville as my number one pick but he has been tainted by the current campaign. I think i'd still pick him over Pardew, Howe, Hiddink etc.
