The NFL Thread

To be fair to Alan, he is correct in what he says. In the US black athletes are judged differently to white ones - especially QBs. Several NFL teams looked upon Jackson as a WR not a QB - as an athlete not an intelligent person.
Such comments may not actually be racially charged, but they appear to be because they too often are racist.
As I said, non-racist people do racist things all the time. That includes me. We ain't perfect, and white Americans especially (can't speak to the socialization of white Brits, not to the same degree) are lousy with internalized feelings about race that don't involve anything as explicitly prejudiced as the N word, but are no less harmful and rooted in prejudicial ways of thinking.

I want to make it very clear that I am not immune to this. I make as many mistakes as anyone.

This is spot on.

It isn’t right and there is plenty being done about it but it’s there and from a UK point of view I didn’t realise how prominent this really was until I experienced it first hand (and still did as recently as last January).

We had it fleetingly in the 80’s and 90’s where we saw black players in football as only fast and strong and not having the qualities to be creative or controlling the game. Of course this was rubbish and thankfully has been more or less eradicated now in the UK.

I can still recall some commentator talking about Ndombele's pace and power when he moved to Spurs. Power, sure, he's a big old man. But pace? Nope, he's kind of a barge. And barely a mention of his passing range.

And my, how quickly the lens turned to his lack of "commitment" to the club and his "bad attitude" when Mourinho dropped him that first time around.

I think that’s Mourinho in general, not really race related but it is easy for our racist press to jump on that bandwagon.

I think good commentators and pundits talk about players now rather than the colour of the player and lazy stereotypes. It’s not perfect but it is progress and I don’t think we should be afraid of conversation.

Oh yeah, more about the media's response to Ndombele getting dropped than any kind of suspicion that Mourinho harbors some serious racial prejudice (I doubt he does but I suppose you never know).

You're right, though, even in the time I've been around the sport (so coming up on 11 years) the improvement is noticeable.

Multiple sexual assault lawsuits filed against Deshaun Watson. Will complicate his position IF perceived to be true.

Whenever they come out in numbers like this, it's never a good sign.

This will be very interesting (in a morbid way) to watch.

At the least it's bad PR for Watson. Maybe for a team that wants to trade for him. Regardless of guilt. Then the NFL might want to punish him.
Rumours that the attorney filing the lawsuits has some sort of connection to the Texans.
According to one complaint he forced a masseuse to touch his erection. Then texted her an apology.

Aren't they civil rather than criminal? If so they'll find a way to make them go away
Just cutting out the middle man. Most sexual assault cases like this end up in civil court regardless. Often there's too little "hard" evidence (excuse the pun) to actually press charges.

He's not going to the Dolphins after they've paid as much as they have for Brissett to be a smash in case of emergency backup

Trubisky has signed a 1 year deal with The Bills...

He'll be a decent number 2. Isn't a challenge to the starter but the season isn't going to implode if he has to play a few games and at $2.5m for the the year is cheap for the roll

It's a no from me. Too many roster holes to give up the number of picks it would cost for the number of years involved.

As seen last season Watson can have a probowl type year and still go 4-12 if there's nothing around him. In the NFC East that would be more like 7-9, but still a no at the cost it would take.

I wouldn't have thought you could afford it. The dead cap money you have at nearly $40m is the highest in the league and you really don't need him.

I could see him going to the Jags as that would fit for all parties.
