The Chiefs and Braves have had their issues but have also done the groundwork to get their local Native populations onside. The chops and some chants do need to go, of course, but those organizations have at least put in some effort to make things right, so there's hope that they'll continue to do so.
The Cleveland Indians' mascot used to be named (and I'm not making this up) "Chief Wahoo". If you follow baseball at all, you'll know him as the obviously racist caricature of a redskinned man with a big nose and a feather. The Indians will probably have to change their name at some point, considering that that isn't really the correct term in the first place, although perhaps that makes it a less pressing concern for the Native tribes in that area of the US (they may even get a chuckle out of the white ignorance that labeled them as "Indians" all those years ago). I'm afraid I don't know much more than that.
It's a tricky subject, of course, and one that I'm not nearly so well versed in as I am when it comes to Americas Black communities (and, of course, I'm saying all of this from the perspective of a white man).
Worth noting is that "redskin" is far and away the most loaded of the terms that get thrown around to refer to Natives. But the feelings about it vary from tribe to tribe, although none would call it a compliment. And to have it be a mascot in the nation's capital... It's such a bad look from every angle. It would be equivalent to calling Atlanta's football team the "Ni**ers" or the "Ji***oos".
