The Music Thread Strikes Back

http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/article/37856915/q-awards-winners-apologise-to-fans-for-having-to-use-secondary-ticketing-sites
Stub hub sponsor the q awards (shame on them!) and award winners take to stage to criticise secondary ticketing sites.
Hopefully the industry gathers momentum against such websites etc.
I find it sad that the petition to have the matter be debated in parliament didn't reach it's 100k target last week.

I've used Stubhub in the US to buy NFL tickets and found it a decent service to connect people who couldn't make a game with someone that wanted to. In its rawest format it's a worthwhile commodity. As happened with EBay it's been hijacked by touts.

Yeah I don't think there is anything wrong with Stubhub either in it's purest form - it's helped me get tickets to events in the past too and not from touts who are charging over the odds.

I've sold on StubHub without any problems. But I'm a nice chap who puts things on at face value or below rather than a shitty tout.

Stub hub can be really handy. Last time I used it was for WWE tickets for Micro, and I got great seats very close to the action*

*dangerously close to Jinky, but that is another story!

Rush are re-releasing 2112. Stunning does not even begin to describe that album.

Show of Hands tonight at Birmingham Town Hall. Looking forward to it.

Have only been to 1 gig since May, and that was Mogwai playing Atomic.

Been having withdrawal symptoms for ages. Soon, I'll be getting a cure by going to see Einaudi on the 22nd. Can't wait!

Had 2 gigs last week.

Local Natives & Alien Ant Farm.

Local Natives are touring in support of their new album, Sunlit Youth. They are a fantastic band, superb live. The vocal harmonising is beautiful and if you haven't given them a listen yet, I would encourage you to do so (all their albums are available on Spotify).

Alien Ant Farm was a completely different type of gig. They were touring to celebrate their debut album ANThology being 15 years old. All the band had put on some timber over the years, and as it was the last show of their 4 month stint touring the globe before flying back home, and with that, they all seemed to have enjoyed a drink or ten before coming on. Dryden the lead singer shouted "I'm absolutely smashed Oxford and I apologise in advance!" at the end of the first song. That said, you'd have never have known - they whizzed through the songs on ANThology, reminding me of how much I loved that album. It's a shame that Smooth Criminal, whilst being their biggest and most popular track, is the track that people relate to the band with the most - because actually, they are brilliant songwriters and some of the lesser known tracks on the album as well as later releases are so much better.

The support band Hed PE were quite funny as well, although not my cup of tea.

Next gig is The Fratellis in December, playing the whole of Costello Music.

All may not be lost, had the following email:
Dear lemon jelly,

You recently signed the petition “Enforce the Consumer Rights Act to protect music, arts and sport fans from touts”:
https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/128969

A group of MPs called the Culture, Media and Sport Committee are investigating digital ticket harvesting and reselling in a one-off public session.

On Tuesday 15 November at 10.30am they will question experts about the problem of using software to harvest tickets from primary sellers’ online sites and selling them on at inflated prices to the detriment of fans, artists and organisers of entertainment and sporting events via the secondary market.

The session will also look at the problems caused by digital ticket purchasing software, also known as 'bots', and the reselling of tickets to major events harvested by touts, with a range of relevant interested parties.

You can watch the session live from 10.30am Parliament TV:
http://www.parliamentlive.tv/Event/...969&utm_medium=email&utm_content=parliamenttv

You can find out more about the session including who they will be questioning on the Committee's webpage: http://www.parliament.uk/business/c...=128969&utm_medium=email&utm_content=newstory

What is the Culture Media and Sport Committee?

The Culture Media and Sport Committee looks at how the Government Department of Culture Media and Sport:

○ is run
○ spends money
○ decides on its policies

It's a cross-party committee and is independent of the Government.

You can find out more about the Culture Media and Sport Committee on its website: http://www.parliament.uk/cmscom?utm...969&utm_medium=email&utm_content=cmscommittee

You can follow the Culture Media and Sport Committee on Twitter: @CommonsCMS

This is a ‘select committee’. Find out how Select Committees work:

Will be interesting to see what comes of it.

Ooooooo! Interesting. Any good?

De La Soul are gigging round here in march, and just had a text off a mate saying method man & redman are at the institute new years day, but I can't find any info anywhere about it. Plus I doubt I can afford either too.

It sounds magnificent on a good set of headphones. The production is off the scale.

Q-Tip is a genius.

Been to my first gigs in ages the last two nights, after seeing Sean Lock on Sunday night too, and they'd couldn't have been much different!

Went to see Nathaniel Rateliff and the Nightsweats last night, saw them on Jools Holland a while back and the songs seemed pretty catchy so decided to get tickets, great show, the whole band just seemed so pumped for it the whole way through and the guy's got a ridiculously powerful voice. I'd recommend anyone give them a go.

Just got back from seeing Jack Garratt, again someone who seemed absolutely buzzed to be there, I wouldn't have thought his music was to everyone's tastes but he's extremely talented, constantly flitting around between drums, keyboard, guitar and all manner of electronic wizardry. Seems to be a really likeable bloke too, as I say probably not everyone's cup of tea but worth a watch just to admire his multi-tasking if nothing else.

I think Jack Garrett is massively overrated from what I've seen. It's not too much of a stretch for a guitarist to be able to play a bit of keyboard and smack out a few beats. Turning that ability and multitasking prowess into a comprehensive piece of music that equates to more than the sum of its parts is where he falls short, imo.

The Specials are playing a summer gig with Toots and the Maytals as special guests.
