Steve McLaren is to remain in charge at Newcastle United.

...because non of their targets (Moyes and Benitez) are willing to step into a Relegation Battle and they can't find where John Carver is currently hiding.

Probably so. Though Deano is available...

There's still a lot of talk that Newcastle want Rafa and he's interested. Would be quite the drop to start the season with Ronaldo and Gareth Bale as two of your players and end it managing Gabriel Obertan and Emmanuel Rivière.

Rafa Benitez...

Not enough facepalm in the UK for that. He'll be gone in 12 months.

Paddy power seem to think he's gone, they did the "would you like a big sport direct bag to put your stuff in? That'll be a pound Steve" and had a gif of him leaving St James park with a brolly like Mary poppins on their Facebook page, this was at 15.10

Last night It was reported that McLaren was staying. A somewhat dramatic turnaround inside 24 hours.

Depends what source you believe though. Some of them (the Guardian and the local papers up there in particular) haven't moved from where they were on Monday, he's effectively been finished since the Bournemouth game and it's just a matter of getting the replacement in before they officially boot him. None of those were saying he was safe, I think BT were but not sure on anyone else. Sky weren't saying either way when I checked last night, still the "Rafa is interested" story.

He obviously backs himself to just about keep them up and then spend oodles in the summer

It's hardly going to wreck his reputation or bury his future chances of getting a job if he does take over and they go down. He'll still be Champions League winner Rafa Benitez, not Rafa "the Newcastle relegator" Benitez. I mean he's still highly regarded despite failing at Inter, Napoli and Real Madrid.

He's always retained his home in England ever since he left Liverpool, he likes living and working here, he isn't going to be in the frame for anyone in the top half of the Premier League at the moment, Newcastle is one of those challenges where if you get it right (as in Keegan's first spell or Sir Bob's time) then it's great. Ashley actually seems to be funding them properly now as well, his mistake this year was employing a born loser.

Sky are reporting that Newcastle United are in talks with Benitez, but I am not aware that they have announced that McLaren has left the club. The situation is not being handled very well.

Maybe McLaren isn't leaving the club?

He's got a position on the board as well as being head coach hasn't he?

Never rated McLaren myself, way overrated..Benitez is a better choice any day of the week

McLaren could move upstairs I suppose.

Don't think he will though. He will just be sacked. Newcastle never seem to handle these things particularly well, do they?

I think the whole way this has been handled is very in keeping with the class of a man like Mike Ashley

With Newcastle most likely doomed the question is will Benitez be the man to bring them Championship success. I doubt it.
