The January 2025 Transfer Thread

He started every league game for Lage, bar the one immediately after his arrival where he came on as sub and Southampton where he came on at half time. He started the first game post him leaving, where he put zero effort in. Nothing to do with style or looks, he wasn't trying, he was sulking and shrugging his shoulders which is why Davis took him off at half time. Judah from 2 minutes 5 for those who seem to have forgotten

Why are people retrospectively making excuses and reinventing history?

His Chelsea performance was spectacular.
Pretty sure Davis tried to protect him with the old " he felt ill".

He sums up the end of the old Jorge era. Pushed onto us because money needed to be moved around.

Like a little bonus we are now getting something back, even if just for a few months.
Only wasted around 75% of that £27m now.

Hunt v Watford is up there if we're talking worst individual performances. He was clearly finished physically way before that though
Don't know why I do this to myself sometimes

"It's St David's Day today and I hoped we might get a bit of luck. But then I found out that their keeper Jonathan Bond is Welsh. And he had a good day too."

Had to stop myself going down a Deano rabbit hole.

v Cardiff

"We conceded a goal from a long throw and to make matters worse I had walked the players through that before the game and shown them on the DVD.

players not in the right positions I guess...

Guedes has always struck me as a classic case of gifted child syndrome. He was hyped up as a youth player, and he did have some talents to mark him out over his peers, but I just don't get the sense he ever had the application to try and reach the potential others saw in him. He can easily look like both a world-beater and a competition winner within the same match - sometimes within the same minute of play - and his career stats are similarly all over the place. His attitude regularly stinks when things don't go his way, and if he never fixes that mental side of his game then he's never going to be a player worth what we paid for him.

I’ve not seen the world beater part. He’s useful without any sort of skill set that sets him apart from others. He’s not terribly quick, doesn’t beat a man, not good in the air, not a natural finisher, doesn’t hold the ball up especially well or has a range of passing/crossing skills. If you paid £5-£10m then your probably getting what he’s worth, not the extortionate fee we paid.

He gets knocked off the ball very easily. It might seem unfair to compare him to Jota, but IIRC there was a time when Guedes was getting into Portugal squads ahead of Jota when the latter was showing how well he could cope with the physicality of English football.

Yeah, it's massive gaslighting. He's still pretty crap to be honest, just not totally worthless as he was a year ago and better than Bellegarde, Forbs or Hwang on a good day. On a bad day he's still one of the worst footballers I've ever seen.

If I woke up on New Year's Day and we'd sold him to Lage's Benfica for £7m I'd be delighted.

Guedes definitely had preference over Jota for a bit (with Portugal). Was weird then, too. Diogo is just different.
