The January 2024 "Will we actually sign a striker or just Che Adams/Kieffer Moore" Transfer Thread

I'll raise you Hoddle's 4,512 bids for Idiakez all summer when we were told over and over that he wasn't for sale and he didn't want to go anyway, then bidding less for Rasiak than Spurs did to try and do a double deal around half an hour before the deadline.
Yeah Botman was similar.
"£25m"
"we want 35"
wait a week "£25m"
"The price is 35"
another couple of weeks,
"£25m"
"you again what about 35m don't you understand?"
Deadline "how about 25m?"
"Oh fuck off"
10 months later they sell him to Newcastle for £35m

Are you questioning our sick negotiating skillz?

Clubs are weird.

I mean he would have been a SHITE signing for them especially as Conte wanted him to play RWB, but Spurs with us and Adama. There's the price, in the grand scheme of things it's not a lot of money, he wants to go, either pay it or go away FFS.

I think the best one was flying Matt Hobbs out to Buenos Aires to negotiate with River Plate for Enzo Fernández, Jeff pulls the plug on a £15M deal, Enzo goes to Benfica, wins the World Cup with Argentina and then moves for £100M+ 6 months later.

Chelsea would have got him for £20m if he had joined us though, so we didn't lose out on much

Spurs have form. Tried it with Grealish as well.

Sometimes it can pay inadvertent dividends. Some of the shite Dave Jones missed out on 2003 because we were cheap and had Portakabins for a training ground. Pavel Srnicek (RIP obviously), Luciano Figueroa, Dino Baggio, Emerson (the Boro one, years after he was any good)...

Yann M'Vila & Carlos Kameni as well though IIRC?

Weren’t we linked with Kim Kallstrom too? Seem to recall Jones didn’t think he was good enough.

Yeah, DJ thought Silas was better then never used him properly.

Palace getting Cornet on loan. He's not amazing and again more of a wide forward than a #9 but he has played there before and would be a decent option off the bench. I would've liked us to be in for him.

Frees up Jordan Ayew for us... 😬

The biggest deal breaker over Broja for me (other than the fact that I think he's shit and I dont want him), is that Chelsea want appearance guarantees. The only guarantee I can think of agreeing to is the guarantee he's not as good as the players we are currently playing up front.

I would have been interested to see what GON had in mind if he had got his 9. Presumably he'd have started most games so that means you either don't have a place for Hwang or he'd have gone to a 4231 and the challenge that can bring us defensively

I don't think he'd have changed formation it'd just mean we could rotate between Cunha/Neto/Hwang/Sarabia more.

I could understand letting Sasa or Fabio go out on loan without a replacement lined up but not both.

If push comes to shove then Gary would have to have used them because there is no one else, but to let BOTH options go without getting anyone else in is ridiculous.

Fraser, by default, becomes the next option but surely keeping either Sasa or Fabio around meant Fraser would already have gone out on loan. I get that decisions are made to benefit players, but surely if that's to the detriment of the club then we need to be a bit more grown up about things
