The Incoming Transfers Everywhere Thread: Summer 2023

Lage is the main reason I no longer have a season ticket. Not getting rid of him in the summer was the worst decision by us since we appointed Saunders.

I don't think this forum properly had any of those extremes (that I remember), there definitely was (and still is) a weirdo contingent of Nuno haters on social media though.

I think from many people there was a desire to have a less conservative team set-up after Nuno, and in the first season those fabled first three Brazil '70 games with no points that people could refer to, combined with the false league positioning after his first season, and the attempt to play four at the back probably led some (myself included) to overlook many other issues. Hard to fathom looking back now!

Tbh, the told-you-so's from people who called it earliest on here have been very mild and infrequent, big respect for that!

It cuts both ways, when we were 4th or 5th in the table in play versus Arsenal the likes of Deutsch and I weren't exactly giving him is flowers. When you take a position, particularly one that you have a hard line on you find the facts to support the argument. League table on the one side, unsustainable goals for and against metrics on the other

Wouldn't do that, for a kick off there are plenty of occasions where a cursory search could prove I was talking rubbish about something else :)

It might just be where I sit but there was NO vocal anti-Lage sentiment at home games at all. So weird. We were awful!

I think football fans put far more weight on the result than the performance. To the point that the result influences how fans perceived the game.

Don't lie to us, Dan, we know that every time you log in you shout back "can you believe these cunts didn't believe me about Lage!?" at Mrs. DW.

Yep, I've heard that a lot from regulars, I noticed it especially after I'd turned. Bizarre tolerance I don't think I've seen before

I think it shows that quite of large proportion of football fans only really look at the result and not performance.

A lot could see that the results were unsustainable but the majority of match going fans ignored it because we managed to accrue more points than the year before.

My stance on Lage remains the same.

Thought the appointment was odd but we were told the owners (Jeff) wanted a new, more attractive style of play. Lage's last job, he seemed to employ attacking play (match fixing allegations aside). So as with everyone who manages or plays for Wolves, they get my backing.
I thought the club fucked up him over by not backing him in a poor transfer window. Regardless of how he did it, a year ago we were sat challenging for Europe. Again, I think the club fucked him over with the appalling loan deal for Traore and giving him an inexperienced kid and keeping fingers crossed that Neto would be fine.

It was from this point he started to lose the plot for me. He rambled on about shit that made no sense and he couldn't stop the drift into holiday mode. Obviously the reports of falling out with players adding to it.

For me, he should have gone in May but if the club didn't agree they had to back him. They went down the backing route...even if it was very late.

The confused ramblings continued, the appalling use of players, such as Nunes were showing him up to be lost and clueless.

The Man City game was somewhat out of his control, with Collins trying to snap Grealish in half and I thought it was a fairly brave move to move Neves back to enable.us to have some options to counter. The following game though he showed the plot had been well and truly lost.

I can see how he lost the players when his solution to fix our scoring issues was "keep doing the same thing until it works"

I don't think he is a cunt or bad person but essentially the result of the bad side of our relationship with Jorge. Massively promoted above his level.

A few things lined up for us though to end up with not just Lopetegui but a complete change in our policy. Scott gone and Jeff now seemingly stepping back from decisions that he is simply not qualified to make. We now have what is essentially an old school manager, in terms of control at the club. He isn't here just to coach

Fingers crossed he can drag us out of this Jeff/Scott/Lage mess.

All that said however, I will continue to make jokes about Lage as if I said he was shit from day 1...

I think the false narrative ending up being that Lage could play decent football (based on the first 3 games), but didn't have the squad to execute it. He then switched to a more pragmatic style which yielded results and got us high up the league. If he'd been given the funds and players we'd get performances like the first 3 games and get results too. Lage also had the reputation of scoring tons of goals at Benfica to further backup this position.

It's balls though, isn't it.

The first three games weren't *that* revolutionary (awful first half at Leicester, barely had a shot second half vs Spurs, fair enough we should have beaten United), we didn't really change style at Watford but beat a terrible team more or less by default, then were comically awful against Brentford. We were ok at Southampton (wouldn't say we definitely deserved to win, but we did, so whatever) then a complete fluke at Villa.

Everything was built on sand. There were so few genuinely good performances. Funnily enough one actually was West Ham at home last season.

I still get really pissed off about Lage, I'm pretty certain if we'd fucked him off when we should have done we'd be mid table now.

I never warmed to Lage. Unlike when we appointed Saunders, I was willing to give him a fair go but it was obvious before the end of last season that he was taking us the wrong way. Id have been delighted if we’d sacked him during the summer.

I always loved Nuno and I still do. My head knew it was probably the right time for him to go but my heart wanted him to stay and turn it around.

As for Lop, I love him already. Mick Beale turning us down was the 2nd best thing to happen to us this season ( after sacking Bruno, obvs.)

Fucking hell lads!
This is a transfer thread, can we just resist the temptation to keep on fucking ranting on about Lage?
We have pages on him again. Yes he ruined us and now we're on the up turn.
No more Lage for fuck's sake!
