The Incoming Transfers Everywhere Thread: Summer 2023

Every club's fans think they're somehow an exceptional case.

We're actually pretty mundane all things considered.
Probably so, just seems like there's no consistency these days, maybe because everything is scrutinised and amplified on social media, the main media and football forums 😆

To look at the last 30 years:

- Only three owners
- Spent most of the time in the second tier, the most ploddingly mundane division of all
- Relatively low number of promotions/relegations, don't even have that many playoff efforts
- Only one season outside the top two divisions
- No cup finals
- Only one season in Europe
- Hardly any England internationals
- Never been in administration or anywhere close (and we aren't going to be any time soon no matter what idiots make up on the Internet)
Fucks sake! What a waste of my football supporting life that is!!

Spent thousands of pounds for the biggest pile of footballing "MEH" ever.

(that could only happen to a Wolves fan)

Good and bad, huge amounts of other clubs have us trumped in either direction.

THIS COULD ONLY HAPPEN TO WOLVES, year after year after year. Fucking grow up.
Pfft with the measured and sensible takes

O'Rourke who isn't as reliable as he was, but is still better than most says City are coming back with £60m. I'd say that's about the right price, would leave something like £27m to spend if they made the balance of what he costs on the books less Sporting's 10% available. If being a mighty big word
there’s nothing to stop them spending it all though. If they spent the net £58m and gave 5 year deals the extra amort impact on P&L would only be around £4m pa (until year 5).

Yes, if the situation was really an FFP one

Yeah, Lopetegui wanted to shop at Harrods, O’Neil has his B&M list.

Clearly never heard the phrase “mo money mo problems”.

Has the idea of the transfer window closing at the end of July ever been considered I wonder . Head coaches know then exactly who they have to work with , and you don't have all this distraction of large bids in for top players .

There was a brief 2-3 year period where we closed it before the first game. But most of Europe starts later and we can't make UEFA bend to that whim so it didn't make that much difference.

I'd just bin transfer windows altogether to be honest, they don't benefit anyone. Everyone managed fine before.

Absolutely I much preferred it when you could buy and sell players anytime.

Old system, 25th August:

"Do you want to sell this player that you're not really using? We'll give you £2m or so".

"Yeah, sure. We'll go and sign someone else with that"

New system, 25th August:

"Do you want to sell this player that you're not really using? We'll give you £2m or so".

"See, we would, but if we get a couple of injuries we'll need him. And we only have a week to use that money. So he'll have to stay here I'm afraid because we might not get anyone in, sorry"

Player sits there and does nothing until January.

Solving a problem that didn't even exist.

Think it also helped the smaller teams, if they were short of funds just put one of your up and coming players on the transfer list and get the cash in quickly. No waiting till he went offcthe boil or got injured.

I dunno, I don't love the idea of a roster being able to change dramatically just whenever.

I like windows. Plan out for what you've got; get your boys together and take the season on. Build a team and work with what you've put together. Could always implement exceptions for scenarios like Syc described above if a club desperately needs to get the funds in.

Fine then.

We aren't winning League One in 2013/14 under your model as the squad we had on 1 September 2013 wasn't very good. Not making the playoffs in the Championship in 2006/07 either.

There was nothing wrong with it, teams didn't get ripped apart in mid-season as you suggest. Notwithstanding that it could still happen now in January of any given year.

A transfer window definitely favours the big teams who can carry big squads. They generally play more games as they’re in Europe and go further in domestic cups so can keep a bigger squad happy. Smaller teams still need a squad in case of injuries so end up spreading a smaller amount of cash more thinly, often on players that get used very little if there are no injuries to the preferred XI. If there was no window the smaller teams could dip into the market if a need arose.

It also favours bigger teams as they can often get their business done earlier and the likes of Wolves have to wait and see who is available - not many players are coming to Wolves if they think a CL team might be interested.

Tough shit, plan better (hypothetically).

With the money in the game right now, a "365 window" sounds like chaos to me.
