The " Honey I'm home and I'm bloody starving , what's for dinner " Thread.

Chips and gravy is proper Northern stock food. Standard lunch when I first moved to Manc. Although that was in the refectory, oddly there are very, very few actual chippies (not counting Chinese hybrids) up there.

Battered Cod in Fallowfield was the only one I can think of. And it was shit. Not like you can't get decent takeaway up there, though. Nom. Rusholme Kebabs...

Isn't it amazing the passions that have exploded with the chat about what to put on ya chips? :icon_lol:

I used to go for the kinda mini specials like machin - I preferred the sausage in batter, & that goes well with the mushy peas & gravy.
I just replaced the sausage with the fish. Still tastes cracking.

However, I rarely go to a chippy. In the midlands, most are awful imo. The newbridge, & there's one in cheslyn hay which is great (both do lovely battered chips).
Too many places do shit chips, dry manky fish, & the only thing to attract you is the smell. The idea is better than the actual experience.
Aside from going to the newbridge (which I'll be doing bonfire night) I only have chips when I'm at the seaside as a rule.

I actually haven't had a takeaway since I moved house on 29 May!

Talking of the whole mushy peas, gravy, chips, mint sauce type stuff - I went with my dad to watch Rotherham RFC a few years back. They do a steak pie with chips, gravy, mint sauce and mushy peas in the clubhouse. Very northern but it was fucking unbelievable.

Yeah, it was rubbish. Think I used it twice. Per capita it is probably the most takeaway heavy place in Europe (as it is in terms of bus frequency) so no huge loss.

Majors in Bilston used to be a good chippy, haven't been there for years though. To be honest though it's not really a take away of choice for me, i'm more likely to have fish and chips in a pub than anywhere else, there's a sort of hybrid chip shop in Darlaston, Rainbow Fish Bar, that does a lot of Indian stuff, closest thing i usually get to a chippy take away but usually end up with shish kebab or chicken tikka rather than fish.

There's a posh diner style chippy called Finest Catch that's opened down the road from me. Never been there though as it's more expensive than a normal chippy. God knows why they opened it right next to the cesspit that is Princes End. You don't exactly finish your shopping in Farmfoods then go for gourmet fish and chips.

I like sauce or salad cream on a sausage but one thing I cant stand is a battered sausage. Vile.

Weve only got Long John Silvers by me, and its horrible.

You really must visit Rugeley, that's all there is, takeaways and two charity shops :)

Chips and gravy is ace.
Chips and curry sauce is ace.
Battered chips are extra ace, but need neither of the above.
Battered sausages are ace.

However, saveloys are from satan.

You can put any condiment on anything, its an individual thing, just that some peoples combinations are weirder than others !Bacon has to have brown sauce, mushy peas brown sauce, mashed tatas salad cream or tom, chips vinegar and tom, pizza HP sauce, fried eggs tom sauce, baked beans brown, tinned toms brown, battered fish vinegar and tom, jacket potato salad cream, beef stew mint sauce. I wont bore with anymore.

Correct, fully agree

That's like saying you should never cook a suace because it masks the flavour of the meat you're eating.

If it compliments the flavour then it doesn't matter what it is you put on it.

You're talking about a sauce, I was talking about condiments. Totally different

I made a pulled pork shoulder in dandelion and burdock in the slow cooker on Monday. Fuck me, what a triumph that was.

Tonight its Chicken & Mushroom Flakey Pastry Curry Pie, and a few chips done in the actifrier :)

Gammon, eggs, chips and peas. I won't say what condiments...

But now I really want a chicken shish from Sajaan's in Fallowfield. Bin too long.
