The Goggle Box Thread

It was the 'dogging' episode last night. Amazing how one word can cause so much confusion.

A fabulous episode. I was in stitches when they pulled over to speak to the dog walker.

New Top Gear was good last night, much better than the grand tour. The part in Kazakhstan was particularly good.

I'm undecided on the presenters, I like Matt LeBlanc and Rory Harris but the race driver seems an epic bellend. Like you I enjoyed the Kazak film but then I thought the 'star in a suped up car' was naff.

I will have to watch it. Personally I thought the grand tour was so good they might as well bin off top gear, but I will give it a chance.

Yeah, don't think it was quite there yet, but definitely an upgrade on the scripted 'banter' of the GT

Just ordered a Now TV box with six-month entertainment pass in time for Game of Thrones.

Yeah, think its later (and shorter) than previous series

The filming was later. Something to do with needing it wintry. Can't imagine why.

Really?

I just watched the re-run and top gear is PAINFULLY PAINFULLY scripted. And not even vaguely funny. Grand Tour is miles superior.

We will just have to disagree. The ridiculously scripted challenges in GT were awful (E.g.blowing up clarkson's house), it got to the point that there they were pointless doing - I'm an Amazon subscriber and just haven't bothered watching after the first 6 or 7 eps.

The studio sections in Top Gear were just dreadful. So forced. I doubt I shall bother again.

Yeah I don't think they were great, but I don't think they have ever been good. I've always liked the challenges and location parts, all the ones on GT (apart from Namib) where just awful - if you take out the competition element then whats the point of a challenge?

I preferred GT. If you accept that it is ALL scripted (both TG & GT) I find them easier to watch. They're both entertainment shows in the end.

Broadchurch is really really good. Absolutely gripping.

Yeah, definitely a return to form. Getting a bit annoyed with every potential suspect looking so damn shifty, though. They all might as well have a waxed moustache that they twiddle while laughing maniacally.

Yes it's definitely right back at the level of the first series.

I know exactly what you mean. That might get a little silly.

I also have concerns about the police officer who mysteriously has a father involved in some way (why didn't she declare herself conflicted?) and the role of Beth. I not entirely sure that is believable, not least with Millie. "How are you Beth?" "Well, I'm doing mighty fine considering your husband killed my child and then got away with it. Shall we work together?"

Very glad to see the Charlotte Rampling character neatly written out in yesterdays episode. Did nothing apart from make series 2 utterly implausible.

I don't mind everyone being a suspect after my missus pointed out that this is how it must seem to the investigating police, (and if it's good enough for Agatha Christie...) I just wish they weren't all so hammy about it.

And more... this totally sensitive rape case, that no-one must get details off... discussed openly and loudly in cramped cafes and on busy docksides.

So we need quite a lot of suspension of disbelief, but it's still very good fun. And Julie Hesmondhalgh is a brilliant actor.
