The Goggle Box Thread

tbf it's not one of those that'll grow on you, it'll either grab you or it won't. Probably down to my superior intellect and devilish good looks.

There's a new one in the US I'm watching called Roadies. Created and written by Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous). All about the road crew on a stadium tour. Mostly written from real life experiences too. Very Almost Famous in the dialogue and feel so if you liked that you'll like this.

Starring Luke Wilson, Carla Gugino, Imogen Poots and Rafe Spall (who is excellent).

The first couple of episodes were a little slow but it's really found it's feet now as they flesh the characters out more, and is getting really good now by episode 6.

Anyone that has been in or around a band will really like it. And it has some good musical cameos too. Lindsey Buckingham the other week and John Melencamp this week, both playing/singing in it too.

If you can download it it's definitely worth checking out. No news of any UK airing yet but it's Showtime so should get one.

Stranger Things
Some Netflix thing..

The kids in it are great actors and its set in the mid 80's (and boy does it look it)
Like a cross between The Goonies and ET with some mild horror.
The soundtrack is fantastic..All John Carpenter/Goblin/Zombi(the band) ish suspenseful synth galore.
Winona Ryder is in it too.

Been watching that too, so far (ep5 I think) its been really good - makes you proper jump in places.

I love the 80s feel about it too, almost expect to be watching it on a VHS tape.

Loved Stranger Things, binge watched it in one go, which is unlike me. The 80s vibe is spot on with some superb acting. No surprise a second series had been already green lit.

Also (finally) started Breaking Bad. Have to admit, wasn't massively fussed by series one, and if it wasn't for it's huge reputation I would have dropped it. Glad I didn't, as series two has really picked up, looking forward to it now.

Got that ready to watch for tonight. Looking forward to it, it's getting great reviews.

Finished season 2 of Bosch, turned out to be quite enjoyable in the end. Titus Welliver is pretty good in it, hopefully there's more to come.

Now onto Mr Robot.

it is incredibly far fetched though.

i mean, the elder brother namechecked the Smiths in a flashback conversation with the missing kid in episode 2. the kid went missing in November 1983 but This Charming Man was only released over here in October '83. ridiculous. :)

I thought episode 3 was a bit on the weird side until I read a theory somebody posted (on the Guardian website)

The theory is Elliot is in prison as you only ever see him in certain settings:

The diner listening to Joey Bada$$ who sells him drugs - this is the prison cafeteria
His bedroom has only poor light, is grey and only has a desk, chair and bed - his cell
Ray's office - Ray is the prison warden and has a sideline in a certain website connected to the dark web he wants putting up and wants to get Elliot to do that whilst he's inside
The basketball game - prison yard
The phone in his mothers apartment, hence him being somewhere he doesn't want to be and in a routine, is on the wall in the hall not on a table or kitchen wall as they tend ot be in American homes.

The confirmation is the psychiatrist visit where she said she was only there because he was her patient previously and alluded to having been made to by the court(?)
The rest of F.Soc have not visited Elliot and have only mentioned him as being alive.

Only a theory but I would expect with the revelations in the 3rd episode he'll abandon this imagery in his head and realise he's in prison and F.Soc will attempt to get him out but not until he's done his work for Ray.

Loved episode 3 to be fair, watched it this morning from my sickbed. I like that theory, it's very well thought out and does fit perfectly. It would lend itself to the fact he can't find Tyrell as well.

Ep5 was better. I'll stick it out a bit longer.

I'll probably watch another tonight.

All caught up, absolutely loving it.

While I think that theory is solid I'm more inclined to think he's in a mental institution as opposed to prison.

Episode 6 of Mr Robot absolutely nailed it, fantastic TV.

The 80s sitcom start was fucking brilliant and rivalled the scene out of Natural Born Killers. Such a very clever way of Elliot's psyche taking over to blot out the beating. The rest of the episode was probably one of the most intense yet.

I thought it was a jump the shark moment personally. I spent most of that first 10 mins on my phone.

Each to their own, personally I thought it was class.

Everything.....

Managed to stream live (free!) British TV from the laptop to the TV! All of ITV, BBC, C4, C5 and a few others very happy! :)

I caught up last night and was of the same opinion as you Booz. It moved on the story quicker too and it needed to.

Good point about moving the story on, I hadn't thought of it that way. I was just hooked from the first second, taking such a dark series and slapping 80s day-glo on it mixing massive heaps of black comedy into it. It was obvious what was going on but so well executed and Malek was fucking brilliant, more brilliant than usual as he has been throughout. The inclusion of Adam Le Fondre was genius as well.
