The Goggle Box Thread

It's not in the same league as Strictly. Probably the worst thing on telly. And I once watched Extreme Cheapskates on C4.

And I know it's now against the law to like Mel & Sue, but, hey... I like Mel & Sue. Sue can ask a woman to "show me your purple ring" on prime time TV and get away with it.

I quite like Mel but Sue tends to annoy me, especially with the stupid way he shouts 'bake' everytime they set the contestants to task.

I'm the other way round. I like Sue as she seems quite intelligent but Mel annoys me as she just comes across as daft.

Can't abide the Bake off. Bland contestants, two presenters about as funny as Mrs Brown's Boys and Paul fucking Hollywood, if there was ever a face that needs a slap it's on this scouse twat. The BBC fawn over this show like it's the sequel to a Marvel film, this and Strictly are abysmal TV.

Agreed.

They're not though. They're good TV. Good concepts and well made. The BBC only make a big fuss of them because so many people watch it. Bake Off was on BBC2 for quite a while - it's only since it's become so popular that it's such a flagship show.

That said, I'd rather spend a week in a locked room with only Katie Hopkins and Nigel Farage for company than watch Strictly. Can't stand it.

It must be my dislike for the presenters, contestants and Hollywood then as it isn't a patch on Masterchef, either the amateur or professional (I don't like celebrity anything so I don't watch that version) as I think the Bake Off is crap.

Fair enough. It might be that I'm bored and like arguing with you about the BBC. ;)

You seem to think I hate the Beeb but this isn't the case at all. I think people employed by the Beeb in general aren't good enough. Their light entertainment has been appalling for years. The news channel and news/ current affairs programming is shcokingly bad, either stuck in a the last century or driven by their own agenda (right or left). Channel 4 is light years ahead of them in this regard.

The things the Beeb do very well are sport coverage, drama and radio. And they seem to be hell bent on destroying the sport aspect of this with ITV and Channel 4 catching them fast. I don't know if it's the ideology within the organisation but it's really not in a good place right now and the only way out of it is better programming.

Stop commissioning utter drivel like Citizen Khan or putting arsehats like Chris Evans in your flag ship motoring show. I like the BBC and want it to stay but it has to change from what it is doing. Is that enough to get you arguing again SLA?

I fail to see the entertainment value in watching someone bake a cake while the presenters indulge in weak innuendos. But each to their own.

It would be, mate, but I have to go paddling now.

my mrs loves the bake-off, strictly and watches a lot of the masterchef stuff. i prob prefer masterchef of those though i'm not overly fussed. but as they are all very popular progs i'm not sure i'm in any postion to criticise them. i think it's a bit like music - each to their own - listen to what you like, don't bother with stuff you don't just so you can tell everyone how crap you think it is.

i would say that like a band that constantly plays the same stuff, formats can become boring except for the most ardent fans. of course if there's enough of them, that's may still be a large enough audience to justify that format continuing.

I can add Bake Off to the list of shows I've never watched a minute of.

I suppose the difference between Bake Off and Strictly is that the people baking the stuff are very very talented at it. Whereas Strictly is famous people dancing FFS. I guess you can say they're talented dancers but it's fucking DANCING. Wow. Sorry, but I can't really see the attraction of that whatsoever. But I guess some people think the same about baking a cake.

I think Strictly is a social experiment to see just how banal they can make mainstream TV and make it popular and some idiots have fallen for it and brought this country down with them. See also EU Referendum, The.

Think I could just about get through a whole Bake Off without throwing a shoe. But Strictly, Celebrity, BB I just can't see the attraction or the point. Just a load of utter shit to me and yet there are adults that wouldn't,and never miss a show. Just shows what amuses one person, fucks another right off.

Mr Robot season 2 has been nothing short of excellent so far, last night's episode was fantastic.

I love virtually all cookery tv programmes. However I fucking detest bake off. Absolutely hate it.

Started on Stranger Things last night. First two episodes were excellent. Nailed the tone and style but with some modern narrative techniques. Missus isn't too keen though - she's a complete fairy!

I'm going to have to try and get hold of Stranger Things.
