The Goggle Box Thread

That's far too much heartbreak for 2 nights.

Just watched it again. Such a geek. :icon_lol:

The CGI for the dragons is absolutely stunning. I dread to think of the money they spend on it.

Pedro Pascal is perfect as Oberyn and Ellaria Sand is an absolute babe. Can't wait for that storyline this season.

I've seen photos of Oberyn and Ellaria and they do look spot on. Looking forward to seeing who is cast as Arianne Martell - though not 100% sure if she'll appear in this series?

They spend over $1m on each episode - it's an enormous budget for a TV show.

As usual, can we request there be no spoilers for Game of Thrones? Thanks

I imagine they'll combine Arianne and the Sand Snakes into one person. :icon_rolleyes:

Dungeons and Dragons on the telly, innit?

The CGI for the dragons....

Probably the reason I'll never bother watching it!

Did anyone see Louis Theroux last night? Final part of his new documentaries about LA. Really interesting/scary/depressing/worth watching.

About the sex offenders? I missed it but heard it was grim.

It was really good but very sad. I think he achieved his goal to get the audience to revile and then almost sympathise with offenders.

Up until the final revelation from the self-appointed head of the complex... I knew he was a bad egg!

Yeah. It was superb television. The kind of stuff you're happy for the BBC to be spending your money on making.

All three have been great. Last week's was very moving - all about end-of-life care for terminally ill patients who's families are happy to pay to keep in a perpetually vegetative state.

Just finished watching the Louis Theroux programme and thought it was the best one in the series. I don't think I've ever seen a bad documentary by him.

Just watched GoT. Brilliant to have it back and a good episode too. The Hound's line about people who name their swords made me burst out laughing!

Would anyone please care to summarise why Game Of Thrones is so popular?
And are there any downsides to it?

We've never watched it but my wife is interested in getting a box set, so that might be series 1.
What are they up to now? Series 5 is it?
Is it necessary to start at box 1 by the way?

There were two girls from Game of Thrones on the 'One Show' the other night and they seemed as dim and lacking in any sort of charm or personality as you like.
The only thing I learned from listening to them is that the 'show' seems to delight in killing off it's 'big' names....

Why do you lot like it so much?

Series 4 started tonight.

High fantasy. Massive budget so it looks incredible. Characters are ALL complete cunts - which makes for an amazing dynamic.

LOTS OF TITS AND VIOLENCE.

Honestly, I think that's far too simplistic and does the series a massive disservice.

Clever plots, complex characters who are all strong and yet all fallible, brilliant set pieces, brilliant dialogue, unparalleled production values and generally top drawer acting. I'd say there's nothing else like it on tv, it won me over within 5 minutes of the very first episode despite the fact that I generally cannot abide fantasy epics. For instance, I think Lord of the Rings is a complete pile of tosh and utter nonsense, but this is truly brilliant. Totally believable despite containing dragons, giants and shapeshifters...

It is too simplistic for sure. You are right about the dialogue and the acting which is superb.

The set pieces are spectacular when they arrive but that is the result of the huge budget and excellent directing.

I still stick with my assertion about the vast majority of the characters. Martin himself said he was aiming for a moderately hateful bunch who were virtually all corrupted by the desire for power. Most of the children are exempted from this (for now anyway!). Like I say, having this gritty and badly flawed characters makes for the brilliant dynamic, and from that flows the awesome dialogue.

Roy - you need to start at series one or it just won't make sense.

Very similar to this forum then :)

I do feel like I'm missing something having never watched got, but historically I struggle with fantasy TV. My mind just doesn't allow me to enjoy the genre. Lotr and all that does nothing for me. Think I struggle with stuff I can't imagine it happening in real life. I even struggle with stuff based just a few hundred years ago. Yet I'm fine with space age and futuristic stuff. Stupid brain.

I was like this before GoT. I think LOTR is utter rubbish, as is the hobbit. But GoT is different IMO. The characters in it and the events that take place are all more ordinary and real, the fantasy element is almost a side story a lot of the time, the genuine conflict that exists between the main protagonists could be set at any time.
