The Goggle Box Thread

I sacked The Sopranos off after four episodes. I gave it a go and it really didn't grab me - also, as the episodes I hadn't got through were taking up over 30% of my Sky boxes memory, I thought bugger it.

Shall be starting 'The Pacific' this evening now I've got some episodes saved up. I really enjoyed Band of Brothers so fingers crossed.

Weird how people's tastes differ - I sacked Boardwalk Empire off as it didn't grab me, but am utterly addicted to The Sopranos - the complete opposite to you, Jinks!

I hope you enjoy The Pacific - I think it's ace.

I've started watching Sopranos S1 this week and am enjoying it very much. I've been putting off starting it for ages as it really hasn't piqued my interest until now.

Game of Thrones just gets better and better - tonights episode was utterly gripping.

I certainly wouldn't spill Khal Drogo's pint.

I absolutely love The Sopranos, best thing on Atlantic by a mile IMO.

Blue Bloods not too bad either.

The Sopranos is fantastic. Blue Bloods is ok, but a bit too formulaic- the weekly scene at the family meal annoys me.

The Sopranos also has the family meal scene in nearly every episode as well to be fair.

Maybe, but it doesn't seem anywhere near as forced or gimmicky in The Sopranos.

A series I'd love Sky Atlantic to re-run is Rescue Me. Absolutely terrific drama about a New York firefighter. Denis Leary was superb in it.

Can highly recommend 'em. Fantastic stuff. Brutal though, if you hadn't already guessed from the series so far!

I read the books many moons ago, so was a little worried about how it'd translate to the screen, but man, Tyrion is played so perfectly. Amazing actor. Manages to steal most scenes!

Also, started Treme season 2 now. Really love being back in New Orleans! My flatmate and I were devastated by a certain thing at the end of season 1 though.

Is that 'The Imp'?

I've caught up with Game of Thrones now, and there are some elements of the story that seem pretty much taken from 'Shogun', the story of the battle between rival Samurai clans to take over the running of the Japanese Empire whilst waiting for the Emperor to come of age. It's almost a direct rip off IMO. Still think it's a very good programme though.

Everything is influenced by earlier events though.

Just look at Band of Brothers. Sorry, but that's a blatant rip off. I recently read something about the war and I tell you what - they've stolen an awful lot from it.

Are you trying to compare Game of Thrones to something based on ACTUAL events!!? :icon_eek:

I read somewhere it is loosely based around the Lancaster (Lannister) and the York (Stark) houses from Tudor times. Was that the war of the Roses? My history is shit.

That's the one. 1485. I was being silly earlier, but I read that too.

I'm re-watching it and I've definitely enjoyed it more the second time around. Episodes 6 & 7 on Peleliu are both brilliant and harrowing.

Just finishing watching Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Awesome stuff, loads of very hot naked women, plenty of action and a surprisingly decent story. Hannah is very good.

I read that Andy Whitfield (Spartacus) sadly had to pull out of season 2 because of cancer. I wish him all the best.

So that's the end of Game of Thrones - easily the best thing that's been on Sky Atlantic so far IMHO, which is quite an accolade as the standards have been pretty good.

Just started reading the book now.

The Borgias starts soon - that looks interesting.

Yeah love it, but find myself watching it like a 12 year old watching a porno, ready to switch the telly over if the wife walks in :)
