The Film Thread

Double date ??
I'm not buying you a Happy meal though !!

Cool. I'll bring the salad cream. It's French for mayonnaise.

I'm not a massive film fan, but have just been to see Once Upon a time in Hollywood with Mrs HW.

We both agree - an absolutely brilliant piece of work. I just wish it had been two hours longer.

Exceptional.

I'm looking forward to seeing it at some point this weekend.

John Wick 3 Parabellum is fantastic fun. Nods to the Matrix as it uses some of the lines as well as Laurence Fishburn. Jerome Flynn, Ian McShane, Lance Reddick and Asia Kate Dillon all look like they're having great fun.

And the fight sequences are brilliant.

I might get round to watching the John Wick films at some point.

Once Upon a Time... Saw this on Wednesday. Huge disappointment for me. I'm a big Tarantino fan and really like all his previous films, but most of this bored me to tears. Brad, Leo and Margot are extremely nice to look at and are all very good, but it's just a rambling shambling story that didn't need to be told. I get that it was supposed to be a hazy, slightly trippy fairly tale but the dialogue lacked any of the fizz that you usually get from QT. The scene at the Spahn movie ranch was good though.

I might just be getting old, though. The bearded hipsters in front of me were laughing like drains at every line. Almost like they wanted everyone to know they existed and were getting it.

I wasn't disappointed but agree with your sentiment that it was a rambling story that lacked any direction which I didn't expect. I don't mind character stories and clearly this was a set of character stories intertwined, it just didn't mesh very well. DiCaprio and Pitt are superb as are Robbie and Olyphant in their brief speaking parts but it's like Man City being managed by Brucie Bruce it's great to have good stars but means fuck all if you don't give them a plan and direction.

I didn't see the point to half of the characters and thought Tarantino was definitely trying to get as many of his old cast members and mates in the film any way he could.

I came out of the cinema wandering whether it was actually worth it or just a big waste of time.

The new Terminator film looks class, if you're into the first two. Can't wait for that one.

Watched a cool film last night called Suburbicon. George Clooney directed it. Check it out if you're into niche 50's era thrillers

The Dead Don't Die - Utter garbage, which is a shame because it has an excellent cast.

If any of you are remotely interested in what caused the Global financial crash of 2008, the Big Short on Netflix is a brilliant reconstruction. I was working in a sub-prime lender in Nov 2007 and we all got given our notice within days of the cliff-edge appearing. Strange to think that we appear to be heading foot down towards another cliff edge as we speak...

Our Anniversary on the 13th. When asked what I'd like to do, where to go etc, there was no hesitation from me.

Tickets booked for Downton Abbey movie :) and a steak after :) Sorted. Been waiting ages for this to come out at the cinema :)

More one for the ladies this one but I'm sure he'll enjoy it...

I really liked "whoops!" by John Lanchester, and also Fools Gold by Gillian Tett. Both books, not films though.

:yikes:

Films you loved but didn't expect to:

Spider Man: Into the Spider-verse. Absolutely amazing film. Beautifully (and very originally) animated with a great plot. Miles better than the vast majority of the mainstream Marvel films. Watched it with my step daughter yesterday and we both loved it.

Might watch that now, I didn’t really like the look of it and the girls didn’t look too impressed either.
