The Film Thread

I saw Venom the other week. It was better than expected if a bit slow to get going.

I also saw a documentary on Netflix called "Dealt" about a blind close-up card mechanic. The stuff he can do with cards is incredible. Absolute loon in his youth too, even after he lost his sight. Well worth a watch.

I'll try that Bear.

I liked Venom much more than I thought I would. Tom Hardy is great at being unhinged.

Had a free evening so went to see Oscar bait If Beale Street Could Talk. All very beautifully shot, great acting (particularly from Mrs Davis, the HR manager in the Big Bang Theory) and nice soundtrack... but a bit slow and dull really. One of those films where a car chase or a massive gun battle would have really livened it up.

Realised I've never watched Deer Hunter. Wife is out and I have beer so I'm going to fix that this evening.

Watched Independence Day: Resurgence tonight

Not unentertaining, but 15 or 20 mins longer than it needed to be. Too many special effects, no real characterisation & no humour (which the first one had) - plus everyone knows how its going to end anyway.

Biggest issue for me was trying to shoehorn those from the first film into it, some of whom appeared not to have aged at all despite this supposedly being 20 years later. Jeff Goldblum's dad has clearly found the portrait of Dorian Grey in the loft as he was probably around 70 the first time round, plus (ex president) Whitmore was made to look older by having a grey beard, but as soon as he shaved it off for his last scene looked exactly the same as he did the first time (am sure that if I shaved my beard off I wouldn't look 20 yrs younger!!)

You know there is literally a 20 year gap between the two films though right?

James Gunn reinstated as director of Guardians of the Galaxy vol 3. Good.

Common sense has prevailed. I reckon he'll still be quiet on Twitter though, which is a shame.

Watched The Vice last night, which I thought was very good.

I don't get the reference. Don't hate on Wombourne because we're in the best kept village finals.

Watched Ready Player One last night and I really enjoyed it. Daft but entertaining, and looked superb in 4K resolution.

Going to see Captain Marvel tomorrow night. Really looking forward to it, and it gets me all set up and ready for Avengers: Endgame.

The parts in the slums in that film were filmed in Digbeth.

I enjoyed the flm, mainly due to spotting how many characters from games and films you could spot throughout it

I watched it last weekend. It was fun but not quite as good as other Marvel stuff. Not as good as Wonder Woman either. It felt a bit messy to me due to the way they wanted to tell her story.
