The Film Thread

Kermode's review of Gods of Egypt is a thing of beauty.

Safe to say he isn't a fan of the film. It sounds so bad it might even get cult turd status in the end.

13 Hours:The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi

During an attack on a U.S. compound in Libya, a security team struggles to make sense out of the chaos. Based on a true story, this has very moving scenes as well as some superb action ones. Not Americas finest hour.

Well worth watching.

45 Years. Enjoyed this drama, although don't think many blokes would find it particularly entertaining. Charlotte Rampling is excellent.

The taking of Pelham 123 (the remake) - watched last night

The original was better, but as I haven't seen that for some time the remake stood up pretty well - Travolta was good as the completly deranged hostage taker

Finally getting to see A Brief History of Time.

Oh my goodness. Eddie Redmayne is quite staggeringly good. What a sensational film.

Do you mean The Theory of Everything?

It's an amazing performance.

Yes - of course I do. Stupid me.

It is a wonderful film.

Strange thing I can relate to a little bit of it. My dear old Uncle was a Cambridge Don. Genius at languages. He had an embulism that left him paralysed and unable to help himself but kept his mind intact. I saw his immense frustration in the last twenty years of his life. Eddie Redmayne gets exactly how that was and then multiplies it by a factor of ten to act the part of Hawking.

A staggering, staggering performance. Majestic, moving, I run out of praise I can give.

Yeah I can't argue with any of that.

Before I saw it, my mum told me how good he was and I thought "sounds a bit OTT. He can't be THAT good". But he is.

I was gonna say! Have they made the book into a film as well?!! One of my favourite books that is. If you really liked Eddie Redmayne in that, then watch Jupiter Ascending afterwards, he's beyond terrible in that! Acting so hammed up it can make you burst out laughing. Odd film that. Like a car crash you can't look away from and actually half enjoy.

I watched The Hateful Eight last night. It's long (2hr 45) but never dull, even though it's 95% people talking in a room. QT always does excellent dialogue, and with these characters you're always uneasy about what might happen any minute with them so it has tension too. Really well scripted film. Much better than Django Unchained.

Best interracial bj scene in cinema.

Eye In The Sky. Good film but fuck me, do it, dont do it, do it now, dont do it yet, gorra check with the Secretary, the PM, then the General, then the woman who makes the tea! Christ almighty.

Got tickets for BFG, really looking forward to this one, looks great for kids and adults who think they are still kids.

I watched Hail Caesar. I'm a fan of the Coen Brothers but this was a bit too kooky for it's own good. There's wasn't enough to the story either.

Also reminds me of the spell around 5-6 years ago where tons of people were dressing like Mumford and Sons rejects.

I have yet to truly enjoy any Coen brothers film. I dont get their humour. Best avoided by me I think.

That verse about the wild heather had me in bits

Fargo is the stand out for me. Loved it, and O Brother, have really enjoyed others but not all. Really don't get the Lebowski hype.
