The Film Thread

i think older films generally did psychological horror better probably because they didn't have the special effects.

i'm sure the japanese must have loads of great horror films i won't have seen. films like the ring.
Kairo is another modern Japanese classic. Dark Water, Suicide Circle, Audition and Ju Un up there too. Del Toro's Devil's Backbone is a masterpiece too.

They absolutely don't. It is lazy film-making.

The original doesn't look dated at all.

It's 40 years old of course it looks dated! That doesn't have to mean there's anything wrong with the story or anything else but you'll often struggle to attract a younger audience when something looks so out of date to them.

Nice one. I shall do some seeking out for some of these.

That is the fault of the audience not the film. Things being dumbed down for pups. pfffft.

Audition is good. Any early Del Toro stuff is worth a watch too.

Are you a fan of The Evil Dead with Bruce Campbell? Because the TV series Ash vs The Evil Dead is brilliant fun. Probably have to download that though as I don't think it's on anywhere over here. It's worth it though. As I said I'm no fan of horror but this is fantastic as it has plenty of comedy in too.

Sinister is a really good horror film. I really like the Descent as well

MockingJay Part 2. Bit disappointing in places, although a nice predictable ending.

Batman v Superman

Over long. Visually extremely confusing. Huge plot holes. OTT Lex Luthor character who might as well wear an "I am the mad bad guy" t-shirt throughout.

However, still reasonably entertaining. Not a patch on a Marvel movie though.

I'm going to struggle to watch that, they've taken a classic Frank Miller story that brought Batman out of retirement in old age and bastardised it just to fit them both into a movie for the first time. Wankety wank.

Locke - Literally just Tom Hardy driving on the motorway talking on his phone but really really good. Would appeal to anyone who works in the construction industry and has an unhealthy relationship with concrete.

Pi - bonkers but enjoyable. Good soundtrack too.

Noah - thought I'd try another Aronofsky movie with Clint Mansell soundtrack. Possibly the biggest pile of shite I've ever watched.

Starred Up. I'm not a big fan of prison movies, but this is one of the better offerings with some good performances.

Zootropolis. Decent enough, not very funny for adults really but enough enjoyment from hearing Idris Elba as a wildebeest and listening to Shakira. The Boozettes loved it so that's all that matters.

Saw Batman V Superman this morning. As with Man of Steel - first 2/3 good but let down by last third. Also didn't sympathise with Batman as he's a nasty piece of work. He's cool but I wasn't rooting for him at all and once the final act kicks in he's useless. He's also useless going forward to the Justice League as events are going to be far above his pay grade. I get that there is a fucked up Batman that nerds want to see and I can't wait to see what Affleck does in his standalone movie but this incarnation of Batman can't exist in this Marvel-esque world they are rushing to re-create.

I've been working my way through the more obscure areas of the Netflix film catalogue to see if there's anything decent.

Last night I watched Love and Junebug.

Love is stuffed with complete filth. Sadly the bits in between the filth are boring self-indulgent nonsense, but that's why Jesus invented the fast forward button.

Junebug is a really good study of small town America with a nice performance by Amy Adams. Well worth checking out.
