The Film Thread

I watched Citizen Kane for the first time the other day. I'm sure it was remarkable at the time, and it was a good watch, but best film ever made? Nah.

Glad someone else said that, I couldn't work out what the fuss was about after I had seen it.

(I just assumed I was too stupid to get it)

Films date really badly after all that time I guess. I tried to watch Gone With the Wind over Christmas and I thought it was dull as fuck.

Cineworld and its subsidiaries are refusing to show the Hateful Eight following a row with the distributors which is a quite significant issue for my plans to watch it in the cinema.

Frankly Paddy, I don't give a damn!

On Star Wars, i saw the film on Christmas eve in 3d (great in 3d I thought). but overall i'd have to agree with Loonse. it's enjoyable but i find it a struggle to take it too seriously. the film itself seems to be a rehash of the original star wars film, just moved on another generation. that's like what, 40 years? a blip in time. it's a shame because I'd have thought the mythology they've created could be used far more effectively if they could get over the need to sentimentally include old characters and bringing out tired familial and father issues that eastenders would be proud of. star wars is essentially eastenders set in space, with similar characters such as Alfie (Chewbacca in the film) and Ian Beale who admittedly has taken much longer (30 years) to get to Jabba the Hut's waistline.

in plot terms i felt they were ticking boxes to please an audience rather than developing a worthwhile story.

I've read enough about it over the years to sort of appreciate the great leaps forward it made at the time in terms of cinematography and all that jazz, but I'm not enough of a film geek to really care about that stuff. More tits and car chases and it would have been ace though!

It's A Wonderful Life is still a fantastic film.

Cannot wrap my head around people going to watch Star Wars multiple times inside a matter of days/weeks. There really is more to life! I mean it's not my bag anyway but as much as I rated say, Spectre, I didn't want to go and pay money to see it again immediately afterwards. And unless Star Wars is significantly more nuanced than I believe it to be, I don't think it's a film on the level of Cloud Atlas or whatever where you really do need to see it more than once to appreciate it.

I loved the new Star Wars but the similarities in storyline to the original are the only slight niggles that I had with it. It would have been nice to have seen them take it in a more original direction while still keeping the look/feel of the original trilogy that it has. Having said that, I can understand why they went in the direction that they did.

Citizen Kane was a ground breaking film and that's probably why the critics give it such a high accolade.

Ta TDan. I wasn't really niggled by the movie which I enjoyed, just telling it as I saw it. I would be annoyed if Hollywood took one of the numerous space operas I have read and loved and screwed it up but hopefully that won't happen. I don't have the same emotional attachment to Star Wars to be fair.

Some people just enjoy Star Wars. I think it's just brilliant escapism with awesome visuals and obviously there's a large hint of nostalgia with it as well.

I'm seeing it again tomorrow - can't wait. As we all know from frequenting this forum, we all have our 'obsessions' and Star Wars is certainly one of mine. I've been waiting 30+ years for this film - it's not really a big surprise that I'm seeing it for a 2nd time.

A mate of mine is going to see it on Saturday - for the TENTH time :icon_lol:

It's got Alexandra Daddario in it, that makes it a 9 before it's even started.

I shall be watching Room at some point.

I heart Brie Larsson.
