The Film Thread

Ms Jolemai wasn't a fan as it reminder her of her choir experiences when she was younger...

Anyone seen the film "Whiplash"?

Just wondering what your thoughts on it were. For what it's worth, IMDB rates it at 8.6 but I really can't see how it got that?

From the previous page:

Whiplash:

Pretty decent considering it's about a music academy and a drummer. The fairly simple story keeps you engaged all the way through and the two leads are very good. JK Simmons won the best supporting actor oscar for it. Not sure I'd go that far but he was good.

According to the IMDb trivia section, Miles Teller has been drumming since he was 15 but still had to practice 12 hours a week to get good enough. He played to a soundtrack for the scenes but they still used 40% of his playing for the real soundtrack. There's some awesome jazz drumming from him too.

7/10.

St Vincent:

I really liked this. Bill Murray is always very watchable and seeing him interact with a 10 year old kid is even more so. It's a nice enough story which tugs on the heart strings at times. It's a bit formulaic but this allows Murray to work his magic and elevate the film above the mundane.

Recommended for all. 8/10.

If you are thinking of watching ' Wild Horses ' i'll save you the trouble, don't bother.

For those that like their Sharknado fix the 3rd installment titled "Oh Hell No!" is out on 22nd July in the US on Syfy and will air within 24 hours in the UK on the same channel.

Trailer:

Apparently Jedward are in this one.......

Just watching it now, I am sorry but it has jumped the shark on this one..

Just watched Filth.

Absolutely bonkers. You can tell it's an Irvine Welsh adaptation. James McAvoy is really good.

The second half of the film isn't quite up to the first half's energy though so it only gets a 6/10.

Saw it in the cinema when it came out.
Preferred the book as it conveyed the cop in a dirtier, filthier light, and the parts with the tapeworm were better constructed, the tapeworms thoughts literally ran across the page, across the text illustrating how they were taking over the cops life as the book went on. The tapeworm parts in the film were badly done and came across as odd.

McAvoy was good but in general the film seemed a bit rushed, done on the cheap.

I am a big fan of Irvine Welsh but his books are very cerebral, there's a lot of imagined dialogue and fantasy scenes that go off on tangents that don't transcribe well to film.

If you like his stuff though, read The Bedroom secrets of the Masterchefs. A story about two office workers who hate each other, one whose hate for the other actually turns into physical illness for the poor guy. Really good book.

I've also got Lucy purely based on the most awesome batshit mental review of a film I've ever read.

Sounds dreadful, but I have to see it based on the review.

We finally got round to seeing Lucy last night - it's probably one of the worst films I have ever seen in my life, but somehow I found it really enjoyable. You could spend all day finding plotholes as it's so batshit mental and unbelievable and plain daft. Totally random things happen every five minutes which make you think 'what the fuck just happened, why did it happen, what use is it to this film and why didn't x/y/z happen instead?'

They must have got a 7 year old off their tits on acid and given him a sheet of paper and a pencil and told him to write the plot - it makes that little sense.

BUT it still entertained us in it's own bizarre way. It's too ridiculous not to. Just don't expect anything other than pointless bullshit and randomness and you might get something out of it. Although I will never ever be able to comprehend what the fuck Luc Besson was attempting to do when he made it.

The review in the post I quoted is the best film review I've read in ages because it's bang on the money :icon_lol:

That review is great... Might have to watch it myself now.

It's a Luc Besson film. All his sci-fi stuff is usually batshit mental in some way.

Lucy is mad as fuck but quite a lot of fun.

Saw Ant Man at the cinema yesterday - superb entertainment. Really enjoyed it. The best bit is the giant-sized Thomas the Tank Engine toy - brilliant!

Plus finished the night off with Tango and Cash - I haven't seen it for years and it is still fantastic and nonsensical all rolled into one.

Amy. One of the best documentaries I've seen. Dads really are very important.

Watched the Keira Knightly and Mark Ruffalo film Begin Again tonight. It's a musical/light hearted drama. Certainly not a rom-com as advertised.

It's alright actually. The songs are pretty decent. Adam Levine does a decent acting turn even if his nasally singing voice can grate at times. Keira Knightly has a pretty good voice too. She's credited as performing them so I assume it's her singing anway.

There was one or two scenes which were a bit contrived and Hollywood schmalzy but overall they can be ignored. Ruffalo is always good value and even James Corden was decent in it! But then again I don't mind him compared to others on here.

A decent Sat night flick but nowt special. Would be a good date movie I'd imagine.

6/10.

Took my Grandaughters to see Inside Out today, brilliant!, Pixar back to it's beast.

Found it quite dissapointing to be honest.
But then again im in the camp that says Tangled is a far better film than Frozen.
