The Film Thread

I was put off from the clip on Graham Norton of Pratt facing down three raptors and basically standing there with his arms out going "woah there" to stop them attacking him. Yeah right, you'd be ripped apart before you even said woah.

There is something of an explanation behind that...

The Raptors are part of a a training programme, with Pratt as their handler, so they're familiar with him and used to taking commands from him. Granted it's the first time he's been in the enclosure with them as he usually gives commands from the gantry overhead but it's not like some chump has just strolled into the enclosure with some dinosaurs and gone all Dr Dolittle on their ass, there is the basis of an understanding between them.

I thought the "Raptor Whispering" bit was handled rather well.

Watched Interstellar.

It wasn't a particularly great film, more like an average sci-fi film with interesting concepts. The science was refreshingly good (and occasionally bad). Not as good a film as Gravity IMO but the science was better explored.

Run All Night. Same old same old from Liam Neeson.

Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World.

Decent enough film with Steve Carrell and Keira Knightly. Bit of a rom com ish film but done nicely enough. Only a 6/10 but a very watchable one.

I always tend to like comic actors more when they do "straight" roles. Carrell especially as he's a decent actor. I haven't seen one of his I haven't liked yet.

Enemy

Good grief what a steaming pile of shit. I watched this after recommendations from people elsewhere.

Jake Gyllenhall stars in this film about a man who finds he has an identical double. That's about as interesting as it gets.

The first 30 mins are depressingly bad. It picks up a bit in the middle, but the less said about the ending the better.

It was pitched as "nifty head scratcher" but it was tedious and baffling. There are explanations of the film out there but I can't be arsed to even try.

Avoid at all costs. 3/10. And I might be being generous there. The IMDb reviews have people exclaiming it as a masterpiece of thoughtful cinema :icon_lol: Fuck off!

Jake Gyllenhaal does tour de force double duty in the intimate thriller Enemy, a cryptic essay on identity. He is terrific in both guises, but he is trapped in a frustrating puzzle without a solution.

Sound about right, Bear?

Jurassic World was brilliant. Really enjoyed it - ridiculous in places but it shits all over the last 2 JP films.

I liked the 3D as well, much better than the last 3D film I saw (Man of Steel).

I thought the scriptwriters for Jurassic World must have watched the original Jaws film and intentionally used many of the plots and action sequences. Almost sending itself up at times.

Whiplash:

Pretty decent considering it's about a music academy and a drummer. The fairly simple story keeps you engaged all the way through and the two leads are very good. JK Simmons won the best supporting actor oscar for it. Not sure I'd go that far but he was good.

According to the IMDb trivia section, Miles Teller has been drumming since he was 15 but still had to practice 12 hours a week to get good enough. He played to a soundtrack for the scenes but they still used 40% of his playing for the real soundtrack. There's some awesome jazz drumming from him too.

7/10.

I thought JK Simmons was superb and thoroughly deserved the best supporting actor award.

I've heard it was much better than a 7/10'er. Will have to have a watch of it soon. I liked the look of it, definitely.

7.5 at a push. They make the very best of the plot they have, but it's not the easiest subject to make a stunning plot from to begin with.
