The F1 Thread

Great quali.

I really thought the Mercedes were going to get pole. Good to see the Red Bull's struggling for pace. Should make for a good championship.

I think Mercedes' DRS device will be declared legal if teams protest. They push a button to operate the DRS, and their extra duct works as a consequence of that not because of it, so I think they'll get away with it. It's a very clever use of the regulations IMO.

These FI teams are very good at finding their way round new regulations. Though if Mercedes are doing this, I am surprised that other teams aren't.

Just playing around on Sky's new F1 app on my mate's iPad. Have to say it's brilliant!

You get the main Sky video feed plus 4 onboard options, as well as driver tracker and timing screen. On top of that you get video clips of qualifying and key incidents, along with interviews with team officials and even a twitter feed with all the official F1 people on there.

Basically what you get from the red button and more. It's free too!! Kind of tempting me to get an iPad2 now the price has come down a bit. Not sure £300 is worth it for one app though! It would make my iPhone redundant at home too. Hmmm. Decisions decisions!

I urge anyone with access to an iPad to check it out. It's part of the Sky Sports News app.

Today was the best qualifying I have seen for a long time, great to see Lotus and Mercedes improve their pace and nice to see Red Bull not dominating. Can't imagine it'll be straightforward for Mclaren tomorrow, tyre degradation could decide the winner.

It'll be interesting to see how much Mercedes pace drops off when they can't use DRS all around the track, their innovation will help qualifying a lot but they could find themselves going backwards in races.

Great race.

Top drive from Jenson.

Nico vanishes as he always does, spastic driving from Maldonado on the last lap. Awesome Alonso.

That pretty much sums it up ^

Button was unbeatable today, very very impressive. Red Bulls pace surprised me as did Hamilton's inability to match Button although I have no doubt that without the safety car it would have been a 1-2 - even if Vettel had caught him he would have struggled to pass.

Mercedes were slower as expected, looks like Williams and Sauber are competitive although there have been many instances of cars looking fast in Melbourne and then struggling elsewhere. It does seem that it will be a fight between Mclaren and Red Bull, for the first few races at least.

Did you watch on Sky or the Beeb? Lazenby and Hill were about as interesting as a fence, it was horrendous at times.

I was going to say, those two were as dull as ditchwater. Eddie Jordan, as much of a dick he can be, is much more interesting. Time for Sky to get their wallets out again methinks.

Ben Edwards seems pretty good on BBC. Sounds like a cross between Hill and Legard.

I've always liked Eddie Jordan, he may be a bit of an arse sometimes but at least the bloke has charisma, always thought Coulthard was a very good pundit too.

Watched on Sky and agree with that completely, Hill is especially boring. Love the Croft/Brundle commentary though, the best combination there has been for sometime. For the races that are on both channels I'll be watching build up on BBC and the action on Sky.

Next on the beeb top 20 list is out - Graham Hill in at 19. Seems a bit low to me, but at least he is in there.

More bad luck for Kimi, 5 place grid penalty for an gearbox change.

McLaren look imperious.

Kovalainen also has a 5-place grid penalty for overtaking under the safety car in the last race. It was pretty harsh IMO as he did it as he entered the pit lane.

Once again the Malaysian Grand Prix is a farce. It should be removed from the calendar, but I assume Bernie makes too much money from it.

From the restart a good race.

Hamilton has a nightmare pit and ends back in 3rd. Alonso gets up top but would have struggled to win as Perez nailed him before making an error.

Plenty of over taking down the positions.

Question on Lewis. Is he struggling to get the full pace of his car or is he driving a bit more careful and building points up rather than pushing and risking those points?
