The F1 Thread

Merc have got all the teams falling over themselves this morning. A brief period where Lewis was able to push the stearing wheel away from him on the straights and pull it back towards him on the corners. Haven't done it since the pictures of it went out.

They’re unbelievably good at innovation, seems like it’s something that can help keep heat in the tyres better on the straights or something?

The opposite I think. It stops the front tyres retaining too much heat on the straights and overheating. Toeing in slightly will reduce scrub angle and give less friction.

Ah ok that makes sense. Very clever and I’m sure the other teams will have their own version soon enough!

I dunno it seems like a pretty complex system to develop and copy quickly. Plus you'd need to test it too first. At least 2nd half of the season I'd have thought based on what Ted Kravitz and Gunther Steiner were saying on Sky earlier.

Well the system will be 1 season wonder. FIA announce the system will be banned from 2021.

Thai GP cancelled due to Corona virus.

Thai GP cancelled due to Corona virus.
MotoGP, nothing to do with F1 although highly suspect the Vietnamese GP will be postponed too. Australia confirmed as going as ahead.

As an aside, second series of the Formula One Netflix thingy is out now. Watched it all in two days, still good and great to have Ferrari and Mercedes signed up this time. Did still prefer last year's season slightly though.

Oh, my bad, wasn't paying full attention...

EDIT: Yeah was getting mixed up with Vietnam. Looking forward to seeing that circuit, so hope it happens.

Fair to say some teams are not happy with the FIA for brushing the Ferrari incident from last season under the carpet.
It might be tin foil hat time but Ferrari had a spell where they suddenly gained a lot of straight line speed, seemingly out of nowhere. Bagged 6 ( i think) poles in a row. Then before the US GP, the FIA said they were looking at the Ferrari and all of a sudden they went backwards. No pole and really struggled in the race for pace. No further poles that season. The FIA concluded their investigation but won't release the info on it other than an agreement with Ferrari has been made. All sounds a bit dodgy

The other teams (bar those that are essentially Ferrari Spins off in Haas and Alfa) have released this statement today

"We, the undersigned teams, were surprised and shocked by the FIA’s statement of Friday 28 February regarding the conclusion of its investigation into the Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 Power Unit.

An international sporting regulator has the responsibility to act with the highest standards of governance, integrity and transparency.

After months of investigations that were undertaken by the FIA only following queries raised by other teams, we strongly object to the FIA reaching a confidential settlement agreement with Ferrari to conclude this matter.

Therefore, we hereby state publicly our shared commitment to pursue full and proper disclosure in this matter, to ensure that our sport treats all competitors fairly and equally. We do so on behalf of the fans, the participants and the stakeholders of Formula One.

In addition, we reserve our rights to seek legal redress, within the FIA’s due process and before the competent courts.

Haas and Alfa absent due to being Ferrari engine customers.

Alfa are essentially the Ferrari version of Toro Rosso/Alpha Tauri so they are not getting involved at all.

I was wondering why Torro Rosso changed their name but I see its the (relatively) new fashion arm of Red Bull. Just in case anyone else was wondering too.

Bahrain race going ahead but no fans allowed in.

Bahrain and Vietnam races cancelled.

Bit of a farce yesterday. At one point officials were saying race is going ahead and whilst they were saying that teams were packing up and Vettel and Kimi were on planes out of Australia.

Guess they will try and start the season in May when the European races start. They will have a window in August if they want to rearrange any but I doubt teams will want to race in Hungary then Vietnam, Bahrain and then back to Beligium in a short period of time.
