The Definitive TWF Wolves XI Thread (1970 - present)

I think the lack of Parkin love is a sign of the age demographic of the forum. Had I seen him play bar some footage then he would probably have been my winner, but I didn't, so it feels like cheating to vote for a player purely on their (clearly deserved) reputation.

Can't argue with this! With Jackie Mac, we signed him because he lost a gamble with Celtic and his signing photo was up there with Johnson for lack of happiness, just never really took to him
Lost a gamble?

I thought Celtic just didn't offer him a contract for ages so he gave up the hope of it being renewed and came down here. Think they eventually offered him a deal late in the day but he said he'd given Wolves his word and honoured that even though he'd have preferred to stay at Celtic.

Jackie mac
Steve froggatt (he played there more than emblem at rb- i.e. A couple of times)
Andy Thompson

I think we must have had the shittest left backs of modern times...

Derek Parkin(would have put him in more than once, but won't get any extra points)
Andy Thompson
Jackie McNamara

Also thinking of rounding this series of threads off with a Worst Wolves XI for the lulz. Blimey, I'll have to put some thought into that one.
I guarantee the full back choices in particular will take longer.

I look forward to that one!!

Fair comment - if you didn't see them play then you can't really select him (you are only going to get highlights now on the whole & they can be very unrepresentative)

If you had seen him though you would put him first, though not sure he would last a full match nowadays as did like to make his presence felt pretty firmly in the first few minutes of a match.

This is dead easy by comparison. How am I meant to sort out central midfield in the worst one?!

I think it might make a nice little article too once the results for both are in.

Still trying to come to terms that Foley us the best right back in 50 years means that we must redress the balance at left back. My vote as follows
Thompson. Good defender great attacker and a privilege to have played in the same team as him
Larkin. Nearly 600 games for us.unlucky not to be first pick
Naylor. Better than he was ever rated

I think I'd have Golbourne and Elokobi ahead of Thommo. Great bloke, integral to the early Turner days (which I've already waxed lyrical about this week, so there's no way I disrespect those times and circumstances) but so, so, so limited. Knocking in penalties and thumping it down the line was the limit of his ability attacking wise and he wasn't a particularly good defender.

Wtf? Boo hiss! You are miles off on this one! The only thing that let aThommo down was his size. Better than average defender, good at penalties, decent attacker. Worthy of anyone's top three.

Big George ahead of Thommo. Can t agree there. Big George was a lovely chap but Thommo was better attack wise and no worse defensively

What do you mean "decent attacker"? He didn't provide anything on the overlap at all.

Well done for being able to take pens, it's not much of a standalone skill though is it.

Derek Parkin
Jackie McNamara
Andy Thompson.

Bobby Thomson would have been in there but he left Wolves for Birmingham City in 1969.

On footballing skills George wouldn't get ahead of many - for heart & endeavor yes, but not skill

If anyone other than Derek Parkin wins the left back poll then I will be staggered. By a massive distance Squeak is the the best full back I have ever seen in Wolves colours.

Sadly a high % of folk on here will never have seen him play so his votes will be low.

He was only steady defensively, and was very much safety first but he didn't make the fuck ups so many of our other full backs including Elokobi did. Left back and central midfield will be the weakest area of this team irrespective of who is selected
