The Definitive TWF Wolves XI Thread (1970 - present)

Oh bollocks - last one was supposed to be Iorfa. Clearly too knackered after this heavy work week

Kevin Foley - 71
Kevin Muscat - 33
Geoff Palmer - 30
Sam Ricketts - 23
Dominic Iorfa - 12
Jamie Smith - 10
Andy Thompson - 9
Denis Irwin - 4
Bernard Shaw - 4
Jackie McNamara - 2
Gerry Taylor - 2
Neil Emblen - 1 (not sure how this one ended up here. Think he played one game for us at RB and we lost 4-1 at home to Stoke)

Left backs next, three picks, you know the drill.

Slim pickings really for people of my age (old enough to remember Denis Irwin playing for Oldham, but not old enough to appreciate his work for United, despite living in Manchester when he played for them :D )

Jackie McNamara
Stephen Ward
Lee Naylor

Andy Thompson
Jack Mac

Venus 91-3 he was top class
Thommo

Don't get the Jackie Mac love in

Andy Thompson
Stephen Ward
Scott Golbourne

I don't think I saw enough matches to include Jackie Mac and want to spite the dude who complained of Scottie's scruffy undershirt.

Big love for Veno but he was always a centre half predominantly for me. Think his back had gone by 91 too which basically meant he couldn't play at LB any more (missed a year of football, we picked him there vs Bristol City on the opening day of 93/94, sent off, not sure Turner tried that again).

Jackie Mac was pure class. As much as Hoddle is a cunt, that should have been a top class signing. He helped us out so much in the second half of 2006/7, quality presence (given we'd been using Crapham and Dan fucking Jones there).

Edit: Additional Mark Venus fact, he presented my Grandad with his leaving present at Lucas when he retired. Top geezer. Liked a flutter though (Veno, not my old boy).

I think he was still playing left back in 92-93. I remember going to Goodison in the League Cup and him owning Pat Nevin.

I don't like to foreshadow my articles but there may be a segment in the McGhee one going apocalyptic about how we gave Ipswich money AND Veno for fucking Sedgley :icon_lol:

Must be the only time any Wolves player ever shut down Nevin, him and Aldridge used to destroy us every year.

Edit: League Cup tie was 91/92. I'm fairly sure he basically missed 92/93 altogether.

(Emblem at RB was me, I'm sure he played a few games there and looked class. Maybe home to Tranmere or something)

Can't argue with this! With Jackie Mac, we signed him because he lost a gamble with Celtic and his signing photo was up there with Johnson for lack of happiness, just never really took to him

Pretty sure it was one game. I went to watch us play Leeds reserves at home in Oct 95, Emblen played RB and did well, Taylor obviously thought it was a good idea to do it in the first team and we got panned. Tranmere at home in 94/95 we won 2-0 (and Emblen scored when playing CM, Billy Wright's send off) and McGhee was in charge by the time we beat them in Jan 96 (fairly certain Emblen didn't play at RB in that one).

Willing to be proven wrong! My memory isn't what it was. But I think I'm right on this one.

Also thinking of rounding this series of threads off with a Worst Wolves XI for the lulz. Blimey, I'll have to put some thought into that one.

Surprised Palmer got votes at RB but not many for Derek Parkin.

1. Parkin
2. Ward
3. Andy Thompson

On Gribbers, I think the only two positions he didn't play for us were left back and keeper.

Bloody Lee playing him up front instead of Havard Flo was plain ridiculous. That's not to make out the big Norwegian lug was anything special but for Christ's sake. We were trying to make the playoffs at the time as well (remember that, when we used to challenge for the top six. Colin Lee did that. Twice. Puts into context how fucking bollocks we have been for the last two seasons). Big Havard stuck it to him by knocking two past a very good Ipswich team when he finally did get a go.

Mr Lee did also give us the halcyon days of a four man midfield with Emblen and Carl Robinson as the "wide" options. Glory times.
