The Definitive TWF UK & Ireland XI (1970 - present) - ST VOTING OPEN

Cole,
Irwin,
being totally bereft of ideas has led me to... Phil Neville!

Someone ban him. Now.

Stanley Matthews is revered as a footballer but would he play at the top in today's game? Probably not.

I never really understand this argument, it reminds me of the Harry Enfield sketch that they showed again at the weekend where the Liverpool team takes on a team from the turn of the 20th century. If Matthews was the best of his generation of course he would have still been at the top of the game today, he'd just be quicker, fitter, stronger, live a different lifestyle, not play on bogs of pitches, wear heavy cotton kit or ankle high boots etc. The same goes for any of the greats, the exception potentially being 5 foot 8 centre halves or keepers, but again today they wouldn't be 5 foot 8 so even that really is a red herring

Landslide time again:

Ashley Cole - 69
Stuart Pearce - 39
Denis Irwin - 26
Kenny Sansom - 8
Derek Parkin - 7
Leighton Baines - 5
Ian Harte - 5
Graeme Le Saux - 4
Mick Mills - 3
Nigel Winterburn - 2
Joey Jones - 1
Phil Neville - 1

Centre halves next - six picks as two go through. Open until 8pm tomorrow.

As you can see from the left back results, I've discounted hilarious picks like Lee Naylor and Matt Doherty. So don't pick Eric Young or whatever, it isn't even funny. It makes you look like Gareth Keenan.

Mods, title please, ta.

Wanted to put Adams in mine but thought I'd only go with one "lionheart" and JT was better. Plus Adams is a berk :) and Colin Hendry was superb for Blackburn when they won the league.

And just on Paul McGrath - I saw him play down here for Sheff Utd, first home game of 1997/8. His knees were totally wrecked by this stage, wasn't even training at all. Must have been in a right state with his drinking. He was 37. Immaculate. Best player on the pitch by a mile (and I think we had all of Keano, Bully and the Don playing so not like we sent out a rubbish forward line).

Not that I'd ever want Villa to win the league but the way he played for them under Taylor and Atkinson when they came close...he'd have deserved it.

If we are ruling players out for being berks we will be short quite a few players, and definitely missing a left back.

Hendry, for me, is forever associated with Gazza and 96.
