The Car Thread

Wow. Not sure if that’s in a good or bad way but anyway, bloody hell Elon, wow.

Had my first ride in one of these last weekend and all I can say is "shit off a shovel." Amazing burst of speed that really does take your breath away. And, I'll confess, not as bad as I thought it was going to be when I saw it. Photos make it look really ugly and the interwebs have poked a lot of fun at it but I found it intriguing and a fun experience. Also, if you are around one at any time, don't be tempted to touch it as it records everything with hidden cameras! Quite fun parking it up and looking back through the recordings later. Reactions are very mixed!

Annoyingly, after waiting months to get it sorted, I need to give back my company car after less than 6 months so am back in the market for a car 😡

Anyone got a VW ID car? Can get an amazing deal on a personal lease for an ID7 Tourer - looks nice but never been in a VW electric.

Prime Video now showing the final 'Grand Tour' episode "One for the Road", involving a Stag, a 3L Mk I Capri and a Montecarlo.

Polestar at our place today to show off the 3 & 4.

Been out in the 4. Very very nice car to drive just odd it has no rear window and your rear view mirror is a camera feed. Bit Tesla looking on the inside. Price point high but will sit nicely in a Sal Sac scheme.

Looks nice in black

Not overly keen on the 3 though

Saw a 4 at Meadowhall the other day - does look very smart.

The 2 has been very popular at work but a lot of people with the facelifted version seem to be picking up intermittent software issues like the radio deciding it doesn't want to work or the heating make its own mind up on temperature. Largely minor quibbles but I imagine they'd get annoying it you were spending a lot of time in the car, also been a couple potentially more problematic issues like the car deciding it didn't fancy charging overnight.

My last car, Astra PHEV, had a mental breakdown. Screen went crazy, changed car temps, flicked through radio stations, songs, changed my sat nav etc.
Took a complete reset of the system to fix it.

Cars with near complete control via the screen can be a nightmare.

That's what you get if you buy the Christine model.

when I had the xc60 with same software it got stuck playing the same 20 min podcast on repeat for an entire 4 hour journey. Even stopping and rebooting did not fix it. Never ever again.

That sounds fun! Didn't fill me with encouragement when I test drove a 2 last year and the satnav wouldn't work so had to drive the route with my phone balanced under the screen.

Always kept an eye on Polestar after their 6 concept wowed at Goodwood a couple of years ago. EV’s are desperately in need of some sexy looking convertibles and coupes to draw those across uninspired by SUV’s and saloons. Thought the 6 concept was stunning and there were maybe signs of life there, but apparently it’s not going to be available until 2026 and for a whopping £166,000 too. Ahh, that’s that then.

I know MG have launched the Cyberster which is supposedly a decent effort but it’s not quite on the mark and a bit hamstrung by the badge and name. Can get a whole host of beautiful ICE motors for the same money so shelling on that kind of money for one of those is hardly any temptation at all. No doubt someone will hit the sweet spot eventually and clean up with the other manufacturers scrabbling for a slice of the action, but it does feel as though that aspect of the transition is painfully slow.

I guess we’ll get there eventually but anyway, the 6 concept, a bit more of this and at more realistic pricing please and there’s no turning back:

Cyberster looks a great car at a very good price for a midlife crisis.

Ugh. I hope you were at least able to turn the volume down?

I would have crashed the car.

Working where I do now, a load of manufacturers that have tech issues and then shite customer service.

MG, Tesla & Mazda the worst

Thing is it’s miles away from pulling the punters who like their motors over from ICE’s.

I mean, you could blow a wad on a not bad effort from a Chinese brand or save yourself 10 grand (say it quickly and you don’t notice it, but honestly, 10 GRAND) and buy yourself this baby (for eg) from one of the German powerhouses. Just no contest. EV’s have got to do much, much better to pull the buyers across. The resistance isn’t necessarily the conversion to EV itself, is just the offering isn’t there at the moment.

Anyway, I know where my money would be going for a while yet.

Cyberster is 50k isn’t it? Not crazy money for a crazy fast car.
