The Car Thread

Didn’t know whether to put it on here or the goggle box, there’s a car show on Discovery Turbo where a company in Wales put electric motors into classic cars, it’s called Vintage Voltage if you’re into that sort of thing.

interesting way to massively dent their re-sale value. Like taking a detective comics 27 and replacing the cover with a modern picture

It's happening a lot in recent years. You can understand why when more and more people are environmentally conscious, yet most EVs styling is terrible.

Well doing it with a priceless Ferrari is a bit extreme I agree. I was talking more about Jags and Cossies and the like.

Depends how old or rare the jag is.

But point taken. Keep it cheap and do it to an allegro and you might improve its value to five quid.

But surely if you change the engine of a Cosworth you are removing it's raison d'etre and it is a spoiler and an airdam away from being a regular Escort or Sierra?

Plus are they classics? I was old enough to drive them when they arrived on the scene I think. I feel old!

I was old enough to drive the Mk1 Escort RS2000 when it came out. I wouldn't dream of electrifying it.

It’s a big scene and something that’s been winking at me for a while.

The general consensus is it’s pretty criminal cannibalising an iconic motor that has an iconic engine, but in reality most classic cars are fucking terrible to drive by modern standards and pump out horrendous levels of toxins. Driving them seems like fun but that lasts for about 5 minutes and even then only on a sunny Sunday. Converting to EV with a few brake and suspension mods catapults them forward and suddenly you’ve got something special and very useable on your hands.

I’m looking hard at EV’s at the moment but just can’t get off on haemorrhaging say, 15 grand or more in 3 years on something that leaves you cold. That’s a lot of money down the toilet, and on a never ending rinse and repeat cycle too. Put that money into an EV conversion instead and there’s the opportunity to break that cycle.

That’s always going to more appealing if you’re into your older motors of course, but from a green perspective keeping older cars on the road with EV conversions has to be about as good as it gets too.

If you want to thrash around in Ford escorts and have huge fun mst-cars.com is the place for you

I watch a guy on YouTube called Tasty Classics. He finds old abandoned or cars left parked for decades in barns, garages or just on driveways and gets them going again, tries to get them back on the road or partially restore them. It's good fun watching him get them going again.

He did a Ford Capri recently which was good but has older stuff than that like a Panard, Triumph Spitfire, Porsche 924.

Everything I read about the VW ID infotainment screens and controls say that it's absolutely honking.

Mines got the new 5.0. It’s ace, a million times better (and safer) to use than the system I had in the Tesla.

The AR HUD is proper future level tech.

I've always liked the look of those HUDs. Seem like a good way of getting the info you need without a traditional dashboard.

Its way better than that - it has the standard HUD stuff at the bottom of the screen but also has direction overlays on actual junctions and lanes further up the windscreen for navigation. Works with in-car nav and apple maps too.

I had that in a Volvo I hired a few years ago. Complete game changer.

If anyone is actually interested (and I'm sure not) this guy has done a video. After coming from a Tesla and constantly have to look across and down this is genuinely amazing.
