The Car Thread

I don't miss the sound of engines one bit in my EV. And I love driving quick.

Can understand the demand for the sound of a super cars engine, but surely any made in the near future will be frowned upon, like smoking, by the press/public.

Cleaner, cheaper and a better ride over a sound.

Kia stinger, stopped importing them to the uk about a year ago, now ceased production, no demand for it, everyone wants SUVs.

I think it’s more about badge snobbery. All manufacturers have a relatively small window they can pitch their models in.

Not sure if manufacturers carry the weight of their badge more heavily in the U.K. than other countries of not, but anything pitched outside of its perceived brand norms is pretty much doomed. Sales are slow, depreciation tanks and it’s game over.

Not saying for a moment that’s right but can’t see that changing anytime soon.

I get that, but there’s a passion for a combustion engine in a lot of people that extends beyond performance. You can’t just replace the outright power alone with electric without losing a huge slice of magic if you’re that way inclined.

It’s the Goodwood Festival of Speed this coming weekend. The noise is part of the drama - it’s a symphony. Awful to even think of such an event happening in electric silence. Be like going to the theatre without an orchestra.

The course record breaking electric McMurty last year was incredible to see, but in the end it’s still the sound of the engines that makes you tingle.

As a pedestrian I'd prefer EVs to be a bit noisier...
Don't randomly cross roads without looking then.

I had a young teenage girl walk straight out into the road in front of me coming home on Friday night. She was walking the same direction on the left pavement and didn't even bother to look back, cause she was too busy looking at her phone. Her mate pulled her back as I slowed down and she turned around with her arms in the air gesticulating as though it was my fault she was a dozy cow.

Everyone switches off occasionally or just makes a mistake. You don't think it's a good idea to have as many things to help you when out on the roads?

I'm not sure what you're arguing against or accusing me of here.

“See, the thing is, you only got to fuck up once. Be a little slow, be a little late; just once. And how you ain't gonna never be slow? Never be late?”

Accusing is a bit strong. Just your reply was to EVs should be a bit noisier and suggesting that was unnecessary, I think it would be a good thing.

I don't think you need to make them noisier. It will just take an attitude shift from people. You can still hear them at driving speeds because of the tyre noise. It's in car parks and slow speed areas where they creep about quietly.

And in the meantime, fuck the people who are used to listening for engine noise?

I want EVs to own how quiet they are but you can’t just throw the switch immediately; societies change gradually and so the implementation of something requiring such a change must also be gradual.

I'm afraid I think you are wrong.
FWIW, Im not suggesting they should be made to sound like F1 cars on full chat.

People don't walk around stumbling into traffic with their eyes closed. As has always been, look both ways, engine noise shouldn't be the main indicator.

Admitting you like driving fast and then victim blaming someone you nearly ran over. Top work Bear 😵‍💫
I wasn't driving fast and didn't nearly run her over. I pulled out of a junction going about 20 mph, saw her ambling into the road, slowed down and went around her.

She walked into the road in front of a car while on her phone, am I supposed to get out and apologise?

She wasn't a victim of anything, but I am definitely blaming her in this instance.

It might be quite fitting in the pursuit of progress we round the circle and insist 20 yards in front of every EV there needs to be a guy walking with a red flag.
