The Blame Game

Today's is on Nuno and persevering with zonal marking when we just aren't very good at it. Results in Laporte running onto a ball that Boly is stood underneath. In layman's terms I understand the benefits of zonal, but I much prefer man to man.

I’ve just finished re watching it on sky on 3 CBs said that from wide free kicks any team will always employ a zonal strategy. As always, it isn’t the system it’s the execution. Boly is on the back foot whereas if he is on the front foot and attacks it, then Laporte never gets a free head on it.

Mick Mc on sky was interesting on that subject - he said there should have been a couple of players further out than the line to stop their guys having a run at it -I think one of them may have been Neves, he always started out on one of the centre backs but they ran past him to attack the ball

Yes, I've been saying on a couple of threads now that the 2 CMs need to block the runs of those threatening our defensive line. For both the 1st Everton goal and the Man City goal, they are both in the area standing about doing nothing. Nuno needs to sort it quickly.

I am sure he will.

Seems a bit harsh to even be talking about blame game after the magnificence of yesterday, but that's how you achieve constant improvement I guess.

Spot on, Paddy. I'm still feeling chuffed now.

I'm not going to blame Neves for giving the free kick away yesterday because it wasn't a free kick. Sterling dived and the ref bought it, not sure what you do about that. So it's a mark against the otherwise excellent Boly, you can pick various holes in most goals conceded off a set piece but I think if we're picking out an individual there, he's the one in the best position to influence matters and he doesn't.

Yeah, he steps back when if he stays in his position or attacks the ball I don't think Laporte gets on the end of it.

As you say, he was otherwise excellent. He looks very comfortable at this level IMO as expected

I blame Patricio, took a step to his right due to being a huge massive righty...

Really enjoying this banter you are having with just about everyone Cyber keep it up great stuff.:beerchug:

Just catching up with this thread after it (weirdly) passed me by. So what’s the deal with the final decision? Are we going with the general consensus of the thread or is it just Dan’s decision?

For me, Neves takes a proportion of the blame for City’s goal. Dive or no dive, he made the tackle on the edge of the box and got no where near the ball so it is what it is. It’s also not the first time he has given sloppy free kicks away in dangerous areas (thankfully we haven’t been made to pay for some of the others).

Put it this way - would you (Dan) have given Doherty a point of the blame if it was him tackling Sterling? Of course you would. So if you’re going to do this thread, let’s do it properly.

As for the other goals, I’d say they’re more or less spot on - although I side with Kenny for Leicester’s second. That’s extremely harsh to blame Rui.

No I wouldn't. Don't concoct imaginary scenarios :icon_lol:

This isn't Italy, I'm not going to criticise a player for making a tackle that the opposition player was able to make look like a foul to the ref. Conning the ref is not a skill, it is cheating. Neves did make some clumsy challenges on Saturday but the only one we were punished by wasn't a foul so, not his fault. If anything I am happy to put down the ref himself as part to blame as that will be a factor in some of the goals we concede across the season.

Really? He still looked awful at it against City, he made a hash of a few tackles and gave away a couple of free kicks as I recall. I remember saying it to my Dad at the time, Neves tackles like Paul Scholes
You tend to only notice the bad on TV. Last season he had Saiss to make the bulk of the tackles, this season he and Moutinho are sharing it equally, and we still managed to keep the second best prem team at bay.

Indeed we did but it certainly wasn't down to Ruben's tackling!

Aye, he's been great at that side of things. If anything his passing was a bit loose vs Everton and I would expect him to hit the target with that 25 yarder at 1-0 vs City. Defensively he's been excellent, filling in superbly, tackling has been more or less spot on.
