The 2015/2016 Summer Improvement Thread

This 'seeing what is about' is still a purpose though isn't it?

It's not like he's just going to watch the game as a neutral, there's surely some underlying reason behind it, he might not be looking towards an imminent signing but just someone he's heard things about or a particular youth set up he's fond of. He may not go there with any great expectation but there's got to be something, however minimal, to strike his interest to begin with otherwise it's just casual scouting by pot luck.

I don't know if you're being deliberately obtuse or just can't accept the simple truth that manager's sometimes do go to games without a purpose, sometimes just to watch a game.

I can accept that managers would go to games just to watch some football, but choosing an U21 game just to satisfy one's football fix seems nonsensical, why wouldn't he just stay at home and watch Barca v Sevilla?

I can't see anyone, professional football manager or otherwise, attending an U21 game without some vested interest.

And as I have said to you before Mark you are wrong.

I'm not being snippy with you Mark, I am telling you this from personal experience, in that I have met managers (and coaches and other scouts) who really have just gone to the reserve game because they had a free evening and had no vested interest, they just came 'for a look'. One even went because his wife was late night shopping in Brum. People do all sorts of things for which they don't have a purpose for.

I've not disagreed that the practice goes on.

I'm just saying that I don't imagine it's the case here with Jackett, I imagine he'll have gone there with some interest, however loose, in some team/player involved. That's not to say I believe that's the case everytime a manager watches a game.

Really?

I don't know KJ personally so I couldn't tell you what he might go to a game for.

I thought unfettered access to all pornography known to man was the best thing about the internet. This thread has changed my mind.

I wonder whether managers of Championship clubs ever consider letting themselves be spotted at U21 games of the likes of Manchester United or Chelsea just to mess with people

He probably made a wrong turning, got lost and popped into the ground to ask for directions.

Although I suppose asking for directions would be a purpose.

Not really Mark, it might be a general look at what is about or coming through. To say it's a purpose for going is a bit like saying you're going to the pub, sometimes it isn't even for a drink but to meet your mates, no real intent, just to see what's happening.

And your second sentence 'I doubt any manager just pops along to a random reserve game' is the bit that is wrong, just for clarity.

I still can't get my head around this bit never mind the rest of it...

Surely Mrs Jackett is the important person here? Know what my wife would say if I told her I preferred a random reserve game for no reason at all over a night with her...
