Fair.It might not be broken but there's massive scope for improvement.
Football is the epitome of an industry that if you don't change you die.
Agreed, I wouldn't look to change anything until the season is done Europe wise (although I flip flop on that) and more likely not until pre season. Without a tournament this Summer there should be the opportunity to do that. It's the mistake I think Nuno madeAn interesting discussion with some excellent points on both sides of the argument.
Personally I think its how we play each system itself rather than the actual system. Plenty of teams have played attacking football with 3 at the back. We seem to struggle to get any kind of consistent attacking pressure with 3 at, sometimes we can if Neves and Moutinho get time on the ball but as soon as we are effectively pressed, we struggle to get anyone near our forward players in support.
I must admit I'd like us to try 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 etc but as we are still in a decent position to go for a European spot, I doubt we'll see a change this season.
Silva (I didn’t technically say Fabio )For me our best formation (and time) in the PL has been when we played 3-5-2 with Jota & Raul in the 2. Difficulty is, since then, we've bought a load of kinda wingers. Don't know who we could play with Raul (please no one say Fabio) and we must get Neto in the team - perhaps he could do the Jota role..
I don't particularly want Neto up front, don't think he does his best work there. He can reach and surpass Jota's level, but they're not the same kind of player. For me our best formation (and time) in the PL has been when we played 3-5-2 with Jota & Raul in the 2. Agree, but then that means we are playing 3-4-3 or 4 at the back.I don't particularly want Neto up front, don't think he does his best work there. He can reach and surpass Jota's level, but they're not the same kind of player.
The homophobes would have a field day over here with his name. He's already a local hero, almost entirely on the back of how fun it is to say "Ben Bender" a million times over.

I think the 3 at the back can work, and it’s more how we set up throughout the team rather than the back 3 itself that makes us as toothless as we are at times. By going 4 at the back and bringing on an additional attacking player won’t necessarily make us more attacking or work.Going to a back four to get another attacking player in seems a bit unnecessary. Upgrading Donk to a player who can dribble and create for others is a lot more straightforward. Then go to 352 with Neto alongside Raul. Donk might slot in as a more defensive midfield option.
Two words, one name.Re dendoncker - aware my opinion of him is very much different to alot on the forum, but I’d say a bigger concern than replacing him is replacing / phasing out of Moutinho.
Agree with this. I’m sure that Jonny, RAN and Semedo could be more effective if they got forward a bit more. All down to risk taking and generally we play low risk and it has certainly produced more points than I thought possible this year even if the entertainment level has suffered. A little more adventure from the wingbacks would definitely make us more of a threat and more entertaining hopefully without impacting too much on our sound defensive play.I think the 3 at the back can work, and it’s more how we set up throughout the team rather than the back 3 itself that makes us as toothless as we are at times. I dont see how either 2 of Jonny, RAN or Semedo can’t be semi effective as wingbacks.
The problem seems to be we don’t get many people running in behind, or making runs from midfield. I’m not sure people have an issue with us being as rigid as we can be against the top teams, it’s more when we play the Norwich, Brentford, Palace where they are quite happy for you to have the ball infront of them.

How often do you see it?I'd like to see us be able to play 3 or 4 at the back. Is it realistic to expect a team to be able to switch between two different ways of playing quite regularly?
