Summer 2021 transfer window

BOTMAN TO WOLVES - THE CONTEXT

Wolves
are interested in Lille’s Sven Botman as they search for a new central defender before the deadline – but they face strong competition from Sevilla.

Yesterday, Sky Sports News reported the Midlands club have been in talks for Duje Caleta-Car, but the player wants to continue playing European football if he is to leave Marseille this summer.

It will be a tough task to convince the Croatian to move to Molineux, so Botman is an alternative option Wolves are looking at, however Sevilla are also very interested in making the Dutchman their successor to Jules Kounde.

Kounde is Chelsea’s primary defensive target and talks are expected to progress once Kurt Zouma has completed his proposed move to West Ham, which is close.

Sevilla can offer Botman Champions League football and competition for a place in the top-four in La Liga, although Botman is also interested in playing in the Premier League.

Lille want to keep Botman and he still has four years left to run on the five-year deal he signed from Ajax last summer - so he will not be available on the cheap.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected Lille financially and Sky Sports News has been told that, should a team come in with a similar offer to the £27m they earned for Gabriel, Lille could give it genuine consideration.

Sky Sports News reported earlier this summer that Botman was one of Atalanta’s top targets to replace Cristian Romero, who joined Tottenham, but the Italian club opted for Juventus’ Merih Demiral instead.

Top Premier League clubs such as Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham have all tracked Botman but are not yet convinced he is ready for their level after just one full season of regular top-flight football in France.

West Ham, Crystal Palace, Norwich and Newcastle have all made inquiries this calendar year but Wolves have come in late in the window, whereas Sevilla made their interest known some time ago.

Its odd how transfers are openly done the wrong way around these days. No doubt we have already spoke with Botman's agent to find out what he wants and won't put a bid in until we know we can match those. Tapping up back in the day (and by back in the day, I mean a few years back).
I think the keyword in the statement is "formal".

His choppers do look incredible tbf.

I'll be extremely disappointed if we sell Adama and the replacement is fucking Guedes. I'd rather park Fabio on the wing.

Percy now confirmed we’re standing firm on Traore

I honestly don't get the need for cash. There was £27m cash in the last set of accounts, and £46m has just been paid in deferred TV money and merit payments. Gate receipt losses are less than 15% of total revenue, and we've had commercial gains. Unless for some reason we basically paid a fuck tonne up front for Fabio and Semedo we should have plenty of cash on the sheet

Shows we aren’t an easy touch. Leicester got virtually all the Maguire fee up front.

I don't think Spurs will come back now and offer the kind of money that would make us rethink - they seem to be penny pinching a bit with loan deals/view to buying etc - so I hope you're right GFFH and he signs a contract shortly after the window closes. I'd only sell him if we needed the cash to buy for other positions.

Spurs trying the loan first option with Weston McKennie from Juve as well.

So if a club like Spurs are trying to push big transfer deals down the road for 12 months, has Covid had a bigger impact on clubs (outside of those owned by oil men of course) than we realise

They've signed Gollini and Romero (£65m to make them both permanent) in from Atalanta on those terms too.

Has anyone really spent big without it being subsidised by exits? City and United maybe? I suppose Arsenal too. Chelsea have signed Lukaku but Abraham fetched them a wedge.

Think much of it has to do with paying for a £1bn stadium during Covid.

Chelsea will have made a profit this summer once the Zouma deal has gone through. They might blow that apart again on Kounde and Saul though.

Arsenal have around a £100m net spend which is quite something seeing who they've signed. City are around the £50m net spend mark at the moment.
