REFERENDUM RESULTS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

Is the current UK government likely to invest in the same ways/areas that the EU was previously?

In the case of that Welsh town it seems they were doing pretty well from the EU, no real influx of immigrants, plenty of funding, all that following the closure of a steelworks which was probably blamed on UK government decisions at the time, so why are they voting out? Why are they pushing themselves away from an organisation is helping them? Do they really think the UK government is going to trump what the EU was doing for them?

I don't think it would be outrageous to claim this referendum was used by many as a protest vote against globalisation, and against the UK government, being given a voice when they feel they previously didn't have one. None of which are the "fault" of the EU of course, and that is the problem with this referendum.

And why would the Brexit governement spend the money saved on EU payments on existing EU regional funding?

I'm confused, before I was told that the money that we save would be spent the same as the UK were part of the committee that decided where it was spent.

For what it's worth the Welsh town was bloody stupid to vote out as why rock the boat. Alternatively, their funding may have already stopped.

No savings at all by Voting out if the below will be the stance of the rest of the EU.

German MP Michael Fuchs, a senior ally of Chancellor Angela Merkel, spoke to the Today programme a short time ago.

With a chuckle, he made it clear things were going to have to change.

"Either you are in a club or you are out of a club. If you are in a club you have to follow the rules. If you are out of the club, there will be different rules," he said.

Asked if it would be possible for the UK to retain access to the single market, he replied: "It will be possible, of course, but not for free.

"You have to see with Norway, with Switzerland, you have to pay a certain fee. And the per capita fee of Norway is exactly the same as what Britain is now paying into the EU. So there won't be any savings."

The point is that the only way we would get that money back from the EU was in redevelopment projects such as this, therefore in our interests to ensure we got our fair share out of the pot. Now that money isn't going to Europe we can spend it as a nation how we see fit. If anybody believes that a hard right Tory Government is going to plough a decent proportion of that money into Wales and the North then we need to dig out that Unicorn pissing rainbows gif.

Is there likely to be a run on the pound if there is long term uncertainty?

Down to $1.34 - not been that low since the global crash.

And that is assuming the money isn't going to Europe. There's a big chance the money will continue to go to the EU as the fee to access the single market, but with none coming back. Unless the UK can make up that money elsewhere things will get worse not better, and even that's assuming this miraculous GDP increase actually trickles down.

Do the Leavers realise yet that the model proposed by Boris retains the free movemet of people but removes our veto on new acessions (i.e. Turkey)?

Don't worry, Boris has the answers. In his Telegraph column which he gets paid about £250k a year to write, of course.

British people will still be able to go and work in the EU; to live; to travel; to study; to buy homes and to settle down....

the Government will be able to take back democratic control of immigration policy, with a balanced and humane points-based system to suit the needs of business and industry.

Akin to Wolves suggesting that the answer to our full back problems is to sign a Javier Zanetti clone for free then sell Matt Doherty for £10m.

I doubt it, however they have retained their free NHS, the stock market (well, the FTSE 100) is at about the same level it was a week ago and all those nasty immigrants will go away meaning everyone will have jobs and earn loads more money than they do now, so they're pretty happy I think.

Can't wait for the Brexit pre referendum NHS broadcast to become reality.

A very interesting piece with a local twist, which helps to explain the reasons why people voted leave and in a roundabout way, why this should never have gone to referendum - it has little to nothing to do with the EU

A good article. If there is so much poverty and deprivation in many parts of England, which I agree there is. How can you explain that millions of EU citizens come to live in the UK?

My point is, there has always been much more austerity and poverty in many parts of the EU, than there is in the UK.

This is a good example to show the EU hasn't worked. There is more austerity in many parts of the EU than when many countries joined. This great place called the EU was great for the middle and upper classes. It has done nothing for the working class. The places that have recieved EU grants for years, including parts of Wales and Liverpool are still very poor and high unemployment areas. This is the same in Spain, Italy, Portugal and other EU countries.
The money from the EU has been used and wasted. Of course the people in the establishment and who cream the system want things to continue, like they were. The EU isn't working here or in most other parts of the EU.
