REFERENDUM RESULTS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

The Tories have won one outright majority since 1992 and they have no-one to lead the party right now. They're completely shot by eight and a half years of austerity and the shambles that has been Brexit.

If they were ever going to win a huge majority, it would have been last year. But they didn't.
Not so sure deutsch. we frequently under-estimate the conservative vote. plus, in austere times, lurches to extremism/the right are more likely.
there are some entrenched views on brexit. liam fox interviewed the other day saying if a peoples vote was run, then he and other brexiteers would be campaigning for a final best of 3 vote.

Vote taking place tomorrow it looks like.

That REALLY surprises me. Sounds like Leadsom is giving it the same treatment as a vote of no confidence in the government, when the parliamentary rules suggest it isn't needed.

I wonder why she is doing that, unless she thinks May will win?

If there are concerns about austerity then you wouldn't go back to the party of austerity :icon_lol:

They don't have any answers about anything, who the hell is going to lead them anyway? Can you see Gove or Raab being particularly popular in an election campaign?

Found my own answer

Am told Labour chief whip Nick Brown told PLP if the government doesn’t grant time for Jeremy Corbyn’s no confidence motion in Theresa May then Labour will escalate: no confidence motion in government as a whole under Fixed Term Parliaments Act. That has to be granted time

There was an interesting comment from an obnoxious journalist from Guido Fawkes. He made a comment against the idea of a second referendum without realising he was actually supporting one. It is the concept of “losers’ consent” which is fundamental to democracy - the winner needs to obtain the consent of the loser for the outcome to be validated and the government has, by its actions, failed to achieve sufficient consent from remainers to validate the outcome of the referendum. At some point, one side or the other has to concede for a way forward to be found. It is increasingly likely that this will only be possible with a second (or third) referendum.

I agree, but we think about our decision making processes. Others don't.

There genuinely are people out there who buy into austerity. Aspirational working class people think it is a good thing. For the life of me I can't understand why.

I'm not sure they have a viable leader, but boris would get votes. He's shown this by being elected as london mayor twice. Incompetent bumbling fool that he is.

agreed. for the life of me I can't comprehend how people like he, and rudd, and others who have had to resign for serious breaches of trust have been able to get back into government. fox in particular has always been a gravy trainer.

He may appear that. The reality is far from it I believe.

Bojo would, shall we say, polarise the affair.

Sure he might bring a few voters out in his favour. But the spectre of him as prime minister would motivate huge numbers of opposition voters to the ballot box.

He would lose MPs let alone voters, there are a lot who flat out won't serve under him.

Hope you're both right.

cyber, am aware he's not a bumbling idiot. he is a cunt though.

a lot of that bumbling is a facade to make a complete fucking wanker seem more likeable.

Laura K:

As of now, 8.50pm, govt will NOT allow time for Jeremy Corbyn's motion to be debated becuase it would be in words of a number 10 source, 'silly political games' - because it would have no status under law (discuss)

Guess we will see if Jez sticks to his word tomorrow.

He will definitely escalate it and then we see which cunts are really playing silly political games.

Confirmed by Peston too.

Got to assume she would have let it go ahead if she thought she would win. Would assume she wins the full vote of no confidence, so the whole thing is a bit pointless. Coincidence that.

She really is a horrible old boot. I can't wait until she's gone.
