REFERENDUM RESULTS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

As I said its about compromise. You can stamp your feet and gnash your teeth and complain that your rights and freedoms have gone or will go thanks to something you didnt vote for but its not going to change history. Or you could accept that this is a clusterfuck, which I do and try and come up with something viable to make progress.

Hmmm

Wanting a remainer to pay personal funds over to cover a divorce bill they didn't vote for.

With all due respect, get $#@!ed with that one.

If anything Leavers should be paying for the Remainers passport and rights costs, as they were the one's causing the issue. Some form of tax you have to pay if you declare yourself as having voted to Leave.

So given two choices

1. Pay 1k a year and keep your freedom of movement
2. Dont pay and revert to UK citizenship whatever it means post brexit

You choose number 2?

I voted brexit and I would consider 1 if I wanted to live and work abroad. Just because I dont agree wth the direction that polictical and economic union for the uk and EU was taking us doesnt mean I dont love many EU countries to live , visit or work.

How about we DON'T leave - until we actually have something that resembles a plan for leaving?

Radical, I know. That's not happening before March, is it? There is no plan.

Forgive me for being less than impressed with the fact that we have agreed precisely zero trade deals for when we leave, are nowhere near solving the issue of the Irish border, have no guarantees for businesses following Brexit, have basically given control to a bunch of self serving lying arseholes and far right, racist attitudes becoming more common place in today's increasingly xenophobic society.

Why on earth should I pay for something that was mine for free because you voted to deny it to me? Jesus.

And I will damn well continue to wail and stamp my feet as much as I like. You created this. You sort it, or grow the balls to admit it is impossible and revoke Article 50.

Easy to say "we tried, but it is simply impossible to do".

its not imposible. its difficult. its happening. I have never shirked my responsibility for anything in my life. My balls are fine thanks for asking.

If we get past November with no sign of any further progress, which I believe is hugely likely, and it is clear that Chequers is dead (which it is - only someone has forgotten to tell Theresa May), then the most sensible thing would be to stop the clock by revoking Article 50. This avoids the no deal crash out. Yes, we are still in, but the point would be that a lot of negotiating has occurred and both sides stances are well-known. Remove the time pressure and then maybe, just maybe continued negotiations might bring something. Article 50 is the huge issue at the moment.

the phrase, "if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem" is not appropriate here.

it should be, "if you're not part of the bigger problem we've created, you're part of the original problem that wasn't much of a problem to start with".

there is no hindsight defence here. i feel no real affinity with the EU, but anyone with any inkling could see this was going to be a shitfest. a lot of us said as much and now we're wallowing in it. I really hope someone finds some form of solution that can work - but I expect there'll be many more years of political and social fallout as a result of wherever we end up.

The leave date will be extended.

I said this a while ago and still think it now. It'll piss off Brexiteers but tough shit, they should've had a coherent plan. We'll still be in the EU in 5 years time.

I don't think the uncertainty really helps as a lot of companies and people can't get on with planning for the future, but it's the only sensible option out there.

The idea isn't a bad one but your price point is.

If the option was similar to a passport, so around £100 for a 10 year period and it is a workable idea but £1000 a year is not an option for a huge amount of people.

Obviously would prefer to stay as things are but we aren't so. Shame an idea like this will never happen

to be fair it was a finger in the air figure. Its the principle not the amount. I was just trying to show that compromise is possible.

I also agree that it will be extended. I think we may well be in the EU in 5 years time. So what. No problem. If it takes that long I have no issue. The reigns on the federal states of EU have been wound in and Britain helped to keep it in check. So if we are still going to be in in 5 years why all the worrying? Why all the talk of doom? We have voted out and invoked article 50 and have a shit plan in place so its going to take longer. Who cares? Not me. Does it create more uncertainty? Not really. Does it maintain the staus quo? Yes. Does it mean hard brexiters have to re-think? Probably. Does it give time for another election and a different negotiating position to enable a softer brexit? Hopefully.

As I say gnashing teeth and stamping feet dont work. Play the hand youre dealt and play the long game. I repeat THERE WILL NOT BE A NO DEAL BREXIT. EVER
