REFERENDUM RESULTS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

The decimation of manual people intensive industry was always going to happen with technology though there were things that could no doubt have been done to ease the transition - short term Government which our system 'encourages' will never look further ahead enough though.

As to my future voting - have voted for all the larger parties in my time (though always lived in constituencies that would elect a monkey with a Blue rosette on) - really not enamoured with any at the moment - I'm probably just a little right of centre with a compassionate edge & there is no one there now.

No idea what I will do when an election is called which could be earlier than expected if May can't control the idiots in her party

Well what would we do for a proper SLDP now then. I am similar although a fraction left of centre. Hate the current labour liberal Conservative monopoly. They are all shocking atm tbf

:icon_lol:

I shouldn't really laugh as it's fucking terrifying, but FFS....

I agree, lets go back to the 90's (but only if I can live in 1992 for the rest of my life because nothing really mattered at that point, I was between 2 phases of my life and for a short spell had fuck all to worry about

Well, it is bias, as he clearly thinks Brexit is a bad idea!

There are plenty of harmless sharks, and most people can swim.

Surely if you are trying to get a point across then the people that you want to get across to are the ones that disagree with you and sound bites like that stop those that disagree reading any further?

If they're choosing to ignore all of the empirical data and analysis, then yeah I guess. It's just a metaphor.

But we know that a lot of data and analysis out there is bullshit, so why should they think this any different?

Well, if people are actively willing to ignore fact then maybe a dramatic analogy plays into their way of thinking a bit better.

It's a battle that can't be won.

If you swear blind to me that Freddy Eastwood was hard done by at Wolves and could have gone on to be a brilliant striker, I disagree and show you video clips of him strolling around and caning the ball into defenders' shins, analyse his style of play to demonstrate that he was a luxury player without the benefit of very much talent, provide you with contemporary match reports and fan verdicts that slate him for not doing anything, bring up his goal record for us, show you his subsequent career where he did absolutely bugger all, and you STILL say he was good...well I'm out of ammo aren't I. And I'll just leave it. You think you're right and nothing I say can change your mind.

It's pretty obvious that Brexit will damage the country, it's just by how much. Because it's become a quasi-religious experience for a significant minority of people (some of whom, sadly, have a say in running the country) then they're determined to do it at all costs, despite all the evidence in front of them. There are no more arguments to be made. We walked ourselves into an awful situation for no reason and have steadily made it worse for 28 months, which puts us where we are now.

The one essential fact is the point that the snap election has now left Theresa May propped up by the DUP. And they ABSOLUTELY will not accept Northern Ireland being treated differently to the rest of the UK. And the EU won't accept otherwise. And the Brexiteers are waving their pitchforks and pulling in a different direction altogether.

All of that means Chequers is deader than flares. Still pushing it is frankly ridiculous.

No deal is a certainty now. Unless the DUP bring the government crashing down. Which they might.

What a complete fucking muddle.

Reality for me is not that the actual vote has caused most of the problems more that incompetence from the UK Government & intransigence from the EU Commission has caused much of the problems we are now seeing.

If Cameron had got (or be more assertive) in achieving a deal before the Referendum was called then this could all have been avoided. Neither party played that opportunity well.

Likelihood that we will crash out without a deal as there are serious fault lines on anything else proposed so far & we are running out of time. No one gets out of this unscathed - either us our our European neighbours
