REFERENDUM RESULTS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

So, America, about that amazing trade deal you're going to give us...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-41397181

Just been reading this. Potentially disastrous for Norn Iron jobs.

This line from a UK government spokesman is very telling about what may lie ahead for US-UK trade:
"it is frankly not what we would expect of a long-term partner to the UK"

People speculated about Trumps protectionist policies when he was elected and now the UK are starting to see it first hand. Bad news for Brexit.

It's not just the people directly employed by bombardier who are at risk. It's also the firm's who supply bombardier and the shops who sell things to bombardier employees.

There's nothing to stop other countries doing this to British exports either, and in the near future countries in the EU can do this too which jeopardises our entire export market!

This is incorrect. The ruling was based on American law where the complaint was to level the playing field. The EU would not have that argument as many of their industries are subsidised, sometimes at much higher rates.

You are right about 2nd and 3rd tier business though. And Trump will continue to be a protectionist idiot and this will see Boeing 'suddenly lose' contracts from other airlines too as every other supplier seeks to level the playing field outside of the US, where they are more competitive.

What's to stop the EU as a whole saying that goods from the UK having a 150% import tax levied against them?

On a wider scale though I don't like the idea of trade breaking down at a world level, its bad economically and countries that trade with each other are less likely to have scraps with each other

About the same odds as us saying that there's a similar rate import tax on their goods into the UK

Agree though with your thoughts that that will benefit no one

In answer to your question, nothing at all. As you say, it's horrendous all round. Nobody wins in that situation which is why the whole idea of leaving is completely fucked up.

Nothing anybody can do about America whilst they have this utter cockpocket in charge.

I for one am shocked that sorting out free trade deals isn't actually very easy at all. There was literally no precedent for this anywhere else in the world.

Almost as if much of that wasn't entirely predictable 18 months ago.

I'm not sure what's worse, hardline Leavers who still delude themselves that it'll all work out or wankers like Pete North who now talk about impending disaster which they helped cause.

Even though I'm still clinging to a very faint hope that everyone will realise that this government cannot handle Brexit and it will all get cancelled, I know it's going to happen and we're going to be pretty fucked. Brexiters seem so fanatical about it (it's almost like a religious cult with them) that there will be no turning back.

It's drives me mad that I have to listen to the two leave voters in my office moan about the cost of everything going up. It's not even worth me making a smarmy 'well, you voted for Brexit, what did you expect' comment as they get so defensive and arsey about it!

Just keep blaming the cunts every fucking time.

At the end of the day it IS their fault. They voted for it.

An easy way to demonstrate what a shambles this is would be (if they are willing to listen, which I doubt):

Cruella has said today that we are close to a deal with the EU on citizens' rights after we leave. But this was the easiest of all the points to sort out. Many of us on here were saying we could and should have done our bit immediately after A50 was invoked. We are now almost 17 months on from the referendum and over six months on from formally delivering our intention to leave. She could also be lying because she said a deal was done with the DUP on about three separate occasions when it clearly wasn't.

If something that easy (in relative terms) takes so long then how in the flying fuck are we going to sort anything else out - matters that are way, way, way more complex and are so complex that even experts (remember them?) can't see how either side can make a reasonable deal that suits anyone - in any kind of timely manner? It can't and won't happen. Not possible.

There's talk of a two year transitional period now, that still is nothing like long enough.

Maybe May is sabotaging Brexit from the inside under a veil of incompetence and lies
