REFERENDUM RESULTS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

I found myself agreeing with everything he said, as this article says everything about why I voted to Leave and as I consider myself to be Left of Centre, it left me puzzled as to why any Socialist or anyone with a view that was remotely Leftist, would ever want to stay in the EU ?

I haven't read the link (I will do when I get a chance) but I'd class myself as being on the left politically and I voted to remain. My main reasons for voting that way were:

1. I didn't want to lose my EU citizenship and right to free movement within Europe. I also didn't want my kids to lose this and all the opportunities for working in Europe that may arise from being part of the EU as they got older.
2. I wanted this country to carry on making immigrants feel welcome rather than vilified and scapegoated.
3. Morally, there was no way I could align myself on the same side of the argument as the likes of Farage, Gove, Boris, IDS etc as well as all the right wing groups such as the EDL, Britain First and the BNP. I'll admit it wasn't perfect being on the same side as Cameron & Osbourne but when you had far right groups all over Europe rooting for Brexit then I decided I didn't want to help make racists & bigots feel like they were on the winning side.
4. I found some of the arguments/propaganda from the Leave side disgusting and couldn't back a campaign like that.

I always was a conservative voter. But I believe in Europe. I guess I am a slightly younger Ken Clarke (who bears a remarkable resemblance to my late father!).

The way this government has acted has made me feel I can never vote conservative again. Old ground for those who have been here a while, but some background for you Prog.

Deutsch Wolf, I agree with much of what you say, but unlike you, even after all these years, I am unable to nail my colours to any political mast. I've voted Tory and Labour in the past and regretted it either way. Last year on June 23rd, I read this article by Brendan O'Neill, who in his own words, describes himself as a 'Leftie'

Then in November he wrote this piece

I feel that he articulates the post-Referendum hysteria really well and as I think you voted to Remain, I would be interested to know what you think of his views ? There are of course many other articles by him but I thought these two were a good starting point for this thread.

Interesting read. Thanks for the links.

A pertinent point - there are pretty much zero trade deals in the world today that dont involve some trading of people movement for free trade. You've already seen it with India and Australia; if we want free access to their markets they want free mevemnt if their people to the UK.

Add to that the fact that the UK government has long held the right to restrict movement from within the EU (with some constraints) and from outside the EU (with zero constraints), and has not done so.

So its not unreasonable to conclude that anyone voting to leave on the basis that immigration will be reduced is an idiot.

I think you once said you agree with open borders. Is that any closer to happening?

What on earth do you think Free Movement Of People means?

For someone that talks so much about the EU you seem remarkably ignorant about it principles. Specifically the Four Freedoms.

Get yourself a clue:

You said you didn't agree with any limits on immigration, we weren't talking about the EU borders.
Is open borders with no limits any closer to happening?

Or is it just, the over 17 million who voted Brexit that are idiots? for believing Brexit would bring immigration down.

Most voted for option #2

They're not going to get sent home though are they?

If we sent all the EU citizens home that are currently working in Britain the country would grind to a holt. I'm not sure why people are worried or even it's up for discussion.

Other people have nailed this already but its the uncertainty that is the issue here. You say its bizarre that people would even be talking about it but its the govts fault that people are talking about it. You've said it won't come to people being sent home but we don't know for sure and it would be nice if Theresa could clear it up. I don't think its fair that someone who has worked, paid taxes, obeyed the law, raised 2 kids etc etc should be made to feel stressed about their future just because they're foreign.

Like I say, the country will grind to a holt, it will never happen. How many British people work in hotels, restaurants, bars and shops in the centre of London? They'd have to shut the place down.

Rascists used to feel shamed into secrecy. Now they feel legitimised and empowered. Sad times we live in now.

Nuttall has said that the rise in hate crimes post Brexit vote is fabrication...

Don't worry, he was probably given false information by his aide before making that statement. Or maybe his press officer. Or maybe his postman.
