Refereeing question

We had an interesting incident in micro's game yesterday. At under 12s the linesmen are one parent from each team, and the referee usually tells them to deal with offside only, and to only flag in clear situations (presumably to avoid contentious goals!)

Anyway, our forward is clean through and gets chopped down in the box. The ball runs free and the referee plays advantage as we have another player on the scene. The ball is duly stuck in the net, only for the (defending team's) linesman to give an outrageously incorrect offside call (the ball went backwards in the challenge for a start; not to mention coming off the defender anyway). However, the referee says he couldn't go back for the penalty as he had played advantage, but the poor offside decision stood.

Very odd one.

Referee is wrong, he could and quite frankly should.

this happened to me, I knew it was not offside, so walked over said the linesman, are you sure it was offside, because if it was, it's a pen and a sending off, surprise surprise he said not it was a goal

Club linesmen are the bane of every grassroots referee. Very few actually cheat, but most just have very little understanding of the laws of the game. Regarding the incident yesterday, if the referee gave the signal and call that he was playing an advantage then he couldn't bring it back. New referees are advised not to play any advantage in the penalty area. I obviously cannot comment on the club linesman flagging for offside, though in my experience I am sure you are correct.

I had an amusing incident a couple of weeks back. A throw in was launched into the penalty area, and the attacking forward was standing yards offside, but he duly headed the ball into the net. Up goes the linesman so flag, and as always I did him the courtesy of going over to see why he had flagged. When I explained that a player cannot be offside from a throw in, he said I was useless (or words to that effect), and that he would be reporting me to the league. As he was an unused substitute, I duly took his name and sent him off for abusive language.

The joys of Sunday morning football...

:easy::easy::easy:

Although, can you quote word for word what he said please, or it just looks like you sent him off for calling you useless, which is a tad harsh.

His exact words were, " You f*****g useless c**t.

Superb. It must have felt very satisfying too after the abuse he gave you.

Well he certainly got what he deserved. The sad thing is that in Leicestershire there is now a severe shortage of referees on a Sunday morning, which is why I am not bring allowed to retire graciously.

Only yesterday morning an experienced referee was subjected to a tirade of abuse and verbal threats. That referee has now said he will not referee on Sunday mornings anymore. It really is a sad state of affairs.

Fair play Frank, that's brilliant.

On the observer thing, I meant the observer to be a 4th set of eyes that the ref could have a 2 way conversation with during the game. Not sure I agree with reports being made public but it might do the officials good if they had their interviews recorded and aired.

Not read the link yet but I would like to agree with point 2.

I agreed before I read the link. I agree even more now. An utter bellend.

I've read the link and Mark Halsey is a weapons grade bellend.

Anthony Taylor's support for non league football is common knowledge among the refereeing fraternity. Whenever possible he either goes to watch Altrincham, or if they are not playing he has been seen at the likes of Macclesfield. I have no issue with his ability to take charge of what is the toughest of games to referee, but the authorities have made a rod for their own back by appointing a Manchester based referee for such a high profile game.

And what of the referee in the Villa vs Wolves game last night? Marks out of 10?

It can't be possible for you to defend his "performance". You have done so with some referees at Wolves games as it seems a constant complaint from Wolves fans "We always get shit refs" but the one last night really outdid himself

Darlo, read my comments in the verdict thread.
