Reading (A) build up thread

Reading hate us because B3h's uncle gobbed on them at the play off semi final.

Good read mate. Love a nostalgic look back, remember quite a few of these games.

Christ that was a depressing read :( Very good article though.

Ref your article DW good as always but I always thought the play off first leg was more Dave Jones fuckwittery trying to play 4-3-3 and we improved with us going back to 4-4-2 as much as the injury? Reading were good value for 1-0 regardless.

DJ didn't really do innovation so while it may have been meant to be a front three, pretty sure dear old George ended up basically playing the same role Newton would have, as an orthodox right winger. And amazingly it didn't work.

Reading had their foot on our throat and didn't bury us. They should have done, we were never close to being in the game.

Good reading DW - memory clearly getting weaker though as don't remember much of that even though I was at some of them

Looking forward to this, new ground and the first time I'll visit Reading for none work reasons! Not so much looking forward to the 9 hours of travel today though.....

The missing line-ups from DW's work, straight of out the "official review" books that Wolves published in the mid to late 1990s:

Aug 94:
Stowell, Smith, Thompson, Ferguson, Emblen, Shirtliff, Keen, Thomas, Bull, Kelly, Froggatt. Subs: Venus, Mills, Jones. Six of Reading's team that day would (or had) played for Wolves, and IIRC it was Kevin Keen's last league start for us; and Jamie Smith's first.

Dec 94:
Stowell, Smith, Venus, Emblen, de Wolf, Blades, Rankine, Goodman, Bull, Ferguson, Froggatt. Subs: Birch, Mills, Jones.

March 96:
Stowell, Thompson, Atkins, Young, Emblen, Richards, Corica, Goodman, Bull, Ferguson, Osborn. Subs: Froggatt, Venus, Williams. Mmmm, such tackling talent in midfield and despite the shirt numbers Emblen at right back. Yum.

Apr 96:
Stowell, Thompson, Smith, Venus, Emblen, Richards, Corica, Ferguson, Bull, Rankine, Osborn. Subs: Atkins, Crowe, Young. What on earth was Mark McGhee thinking? It doesn't mention who played where in the text, so I'm guessing a sort of wierd 3-6-1 or a 4-5-1? Who knows?

I have a horrible memory of Rankine playing up front in at least one game - perhaps it was 3-5-2 with the small foot merchant up front with Bully.

Yeah, he played up front under Graham Taylor the season before.

4-4-1-1 with Corica being an even worse #10 than Edwards I think. We didn't play a back three under McGhee until 96/97.

Rankine played up front under Taylor at Notts County in Aug 94.

That's makes sense, I always used to go to County games away.

Back to it then lads. I hear Leon was in disguise as a goal scorer again last night.

Vinagre in for Douglas the only change

Edwards and Bod both on the bench for Reading

Interesting Vinagre comes in after one of Barry's better performances but no complaints from me. Dave and Bod to score for Reading in a 2-1 loss Jota with the goal for us.
