Preston 1 - 1 Wolves: an acceptable away point verdict thread

Doherty in the 2nd half for sure, he wasn't getting to the ball and just threw himself (badly),the Preston fans on the side were giving him jip after that...thought Doherty got into some fine positions today but that final ball and he seems very very determined to set Afobe up to score.

If it was the time the ball went on to the keeper and doc stayed down just before thwir goal it was a blatent foul. Doc got the ball forat it's why it went through the keeper. He was then taken out. I think the reason the ref did not give it was doc had played the ball to far and almost bounced into the keepers hands on the full.
Doc only played the ball so far and hard was because of the defender flying in to the tackle.

So here's the thing about diving: is a foul ever going to be called when a player doesn't go to ground?

Cannot condone or watch does not mean I don't

Very rarely, which is part of the problem. It’s where the whole ‘he made contact so it’s right to go down’ thing comes from.

And that's where it gets too complicated for me to want to get invested in the argument. Look at Doherty against Brizzle. There is a little contact from the keeper but Matt is looking for it and, for me, absolutely throws himself to the ground to ensure that the call is made. Brizzle's keeper is red carded and the rest is history. But if I'm a Brizzle supporter, the way Matt makes an absolute meal of the challenge infuriates me.

Probably the right call from the ref in that situation, to be clear.

If I'm a Brizzle supporter I would be fookin fuming with the keeper for his decision rather than Doc falling over.

I've not said it isn't a foul but Doherty has definitely made a meal of it.

Of course he did. Keeper made a stupid decision and Doc left his foot in there and went down. He definitely could have stayed up and probably scored but chose not to because Bristol down to 10 was more of a help for us.

The more that this championship style of football is rewarded the more it will be played. If teams get results then they'll play this way. Problem is it doesn't encourage skillful play and any skillful player gets lumps kicked out of them. If skill isn't rewarded then as a nation we don't give skillful players a chance

Which is precisely my point. It was a foul whether or not Doherty went down, but if he didn't and carried on to slot home, does the sending off happen? Almost certainly not.

No because the offence is 'denying a clear goalscoring opportunity' which obviously wouldn't apply if the same player carried on and scored.

Proving the embellishment is rewarded.

Gives me a headache.

No not that time, it was when he was sandwiched and just decided to chuck himself down, no one stopped playing and then a minute later the referee stopped it for him to have treatment.......he got up and carried on.

Exaggerating minimal contacts and feining injuries has become routine. When player A does it supporters A see it as a foul and supporters of B think its a disgrace.
Most football fans are hypocrites of the highest order.
I see our players going down too easily but think oh well there was contact and think "well contact was made, its soft but its a foul" when the opposition does it I am thinking "get up you twat he hardly touched you".
Yesterday there was a lot of contacts made if the ref allows the first 15min niggly then he's set the tone.
You can say thats a foul this isnt a foul and a judgement has to be made, fair enough, but when the ballboy holds the ball for the keeper to stroll over and take it out of his hands then stroll back that is obvious time wasting, the refs don't clamp down on it.
That apart we were bang average first half a lot better second, nice to see Costa have a great game we were uncharacteristically disjointed down the left

Given up mentioning that I think the ref was bad in X game. Get us out the league and onto VAR :icon_lol:

Douglas was pretty poor yesterday, he's surely one we will upgrade on next season?

Ref wasn't bad yesterday, a solid 6 or 7 out of 10. Should have done better on the time wasting but other than that he did OK.

I’d quite like to see Vinagre come in on Wednesday to give us a bit more attacking impetus from open play down that side

Even if our players did throw themselves to the ground, which they generally don't, I wouldn't blame them as they've been kicked from pillar to post all season. I lost count of the number of times I jumped out of my seat yesterday at Preston's cynical kicks and elbows.

Also, Alex Neil, rather than calling them a bunch of cheating fairies, how about give our Portguese lads some credit for an excellent goal? A wonderful turn from Cavaleiro to start the attack and superb work by Costa to get through on goal. I'm still trying to work out if the bobble that teed him up for the goal was a slightly fortunate deflection off the defender or a bit of magic from Costa; if it's the latter then it's almost Bergkamp-esque.

Special mention for Coady. Many people's player of the season and it's hard to argue after displays like that. Talismanic.

I think Douglas’ set piece delivery is too important to lose at the moment.
