Pre-season friendly thread

First half we were a bit huff and puff. Gave them two of their three goals and the first looked very offside so not getting to hung up on It. Two lovely finishes for our goals and we are still without Coady Traore and tonight, Raul. Certainly not pressing the panic button . It’s exactly why we have a pre season.

2 weeks into preseason, normally everyone would be laughing at panic stricken people fretting over these games. Plenty of time left to sign players, work on tactics, etc.
Who is? This thread is just suggesting he can't play the way he wants to with the players he has. This isn't new, we needed a commanding centre half in a 4 before Nuno was sacked

It's not the result (don't care) and we probably end up nicking a draw without a catastrophic back pass from a kid who won't play a single minute of Premier League football this season.

It's how horribly disjointed and rickety we looked in a back four, which our new overlord wants to play (well, we assume so as that's all he ever played at Benfica and he's started all three friendlies so far with a back four. He doesn't speak so we'll have to guess). You would expect it to look like we'd worked on *something*. In the first half we were beyond atrocious, Mosquera aside. How you can marry absolutely no threat and looking like conceding every time they get in your half is impressive. There was zero pattern of play, Trincao may as well not have been on the pitch, the midfield offered the sum total of zero (shock horror, those two can't play in a 4-4-2) and we looked vulnerable to any kind of ball over the top.

I expect it will improve, I expect we will sign players (at what cost to what we already have, I don't know). It doesn't look very good at the moment, even allowing for some improvement after half time there were scant positives to take from that. It's too easy to say "meh, it's only a friendly", we were shit for loads of that game and loads of the Crewe game. We were ok for a fair bit of the Betis game. I think revolutions tend to be a bit less tepid than this.

He has a lot of work to do, which is not breaking news.

4-4-2 pretty much means there’s no place for either Neves or Moutihno, both fabulous technicians but nowhere near mobile enough to play in that system.

It's fine to have opinions as pre-season develops, but it's surely only the Celta Vigo game that really holds any weight?

If we’re going to sign on players and work on tactics wouldn’t it make sense to sign the players first? It’s easy to write preseason games off but I can’t get losing 6-1 to the mighty Morecambe and the start to the season that followed out of my head.

Hopefully Lage is going to Jeff and explaining exactly what we need and why. As it stands I think the odds on relegation are shortening by the day.

For sure, i do think back to Nunos first pre-season though. You could definitely see what Nuno was trying to do in most of the games.
I just don't see that yet, nothing that leaps out at me as a "style", if that makes sense?

Basically, yeah. It’s the only one where I will be arsed about the performance.
Performance absolutely, that's what I said to Jinky earlier, but you can't pretend that the squad as it stands in the formation as it stands is fit for purpose, one of those things needs to give

The big position is centre back.

if we went into first game:
Sa
Semedo-Boly-new CB-RAN
Neves-Dendoncker
Trincao-MGW-Podence
Raul

I’d be fairly content. I’d be wanting a new wide player still and centre midfielder to further help, but I wouldn’t be panicking about not being able to play the way Lage wants to play

That CM would be overrun imo, one or the other with a duracell bunny alongside them and does Bruno want a proper 10 like MGW or a forward dropping deeper like Fabio? I think we need 3, but agree the CH is absolutely the main priority

Some of the comments on here are fucking laughable given the fact that some people were absolutely slated for criticising Nuno’s teams performances on matchday threads in games that, you know, actually mattered last season.
Once Bruno has secured a couple of 7th place finishes and a jaunt round Europe he'll get a bit of slack too id imagine

You don't walk into a shop and buy players like commodities, you can only sign them when they're available.

Only half way through preseason and then another 2 weeks beyond that for transfers. Still plenty of time to find the compromise.
