Pre-Season Fixture thread (22/23)

Little Liam says that when we've been playing 4231 in training it's been Podence in behind and MGW wider on the right, but the real width is coming from the full backs

It was an interesting little segment with Judah.

Mentioned that all the formations played had 4 at the back. Coady, Boly or Collins as the RCB and Kilman, Toti and Mosquera on the left.

Interesting that 4-3-3 has been the formation of choice up to now.

I think we need that mobile midfielder we've all been talking about to make either of those formations work in that manner. Dendoncker would make more sense than Moutinho to partner Neves if the full backs are going to be that high up the pitch in a 4231, but someone new would be preferable

Hopefully we don't sign Josh Brownhill. That would be a desperately disappointing signing

I think that mobile midfielder is a must.

I don't think it's a coincidence we've been linked with 3 of them. I'm still hoping for Nico 🤞

When I think 433 i just think of City/Liverpool with the one in the middle sitting, but maybe it will be more like 4231 with 2 sitting and 1 being the link with the front 3. I'm feeling a bit more positive about things with the thought of playing 4ATB though, like a toned down Del.

Are systems like 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 that rigid anyway in modern football, do they not end up being a variation of the same thing during the game?

Depends on the players, you could do that, but in the example given earlier I wouldn't want Podence dropping into a 433 out of possession. Liverpool don't really push Fabinho, Tiago, Henderson etc up as a 10 even in possession

Not really.

4-3-3 involves one sitting midfielder and two midfielders who are more progressive with the ball, either running or passing (think Tielemans and Kieta), known sometimes as 8's. They play facing the opposition.

The wide men tend to play as inside forwards (Salah, Neto, Mane, Pulisic, Saka). The width is usually the full backs.

4-2-3-1 involves two sitting midfielders, an advanced midfielder who plays most of their time deeper of the forward and with their back to goal, a 10. They find pockets of space rather than running into them.

The two wide players can be out and out wingers or inside forwards as in the City system.

Decent interview with MGW on Facebook, assume elsewhere too. Looks like he’s matured a lot.
Agreed. Best thing we ever did was loaning him out for the season. It's made a man of him. Contrary to the SM opinion that he wants to leave that interview, and the SM stuff i've watched with the players, shows he gets on with everyone and looks like he wants to stay. He really will be a star this season imo. It's almost the same scenario as Conor Gallagher with his development.

If he absolutely wanted to stay he'd sign a new contract and double his money. I'd say at best he's open minded

Wait 6 months and triple it?
Maybe, although obviously there's no guarantee of that and if the £80kpw from Everton is real then that's more or less there for him now. I think it's probably simpler than that, he doesn't trust Lage until he proves otherwise

It's what you'd do if you had matured, which he has. Sit back, see what happens and maybe sign it when you are happy you've made the right decision to stay. Obviously none of us know for sure what is in his head, so it's all speculation. The eyes and ears say he's he seems very happy here right now.
