Pre-Season Fixture thread (22/23)

I'm starting to get optimistic again now, after he's had more time with the players that we'll see that 'Bruno ball' style that he started with last season. The additions of Collins and MGW, the kinder start fixtures wise, and him (hopefully!) having learned from some of the experience of last year. I'm absolutely convinced there's a good, attacking coach in him. Maybe blindly, maybe romantically as that's my perfect vision for how the game should be played, but I'm definitely getting excited. Even getting half a hope that we'll actually see a net spend of c£50m so we can give ourselves half a chance of entertaining a top half finish. Those first three games last year man, we were fucking brilliant. It was so alien stylistically. If we can get near that and keep it up instead of just regressing to this attritional bollocks, it'd be wicked.
There's no room for this sort of thinking on here nowadays. Everyone has already decided we're going to play exactly the same as the 2nd half of last season and we're 100% getting relegated.

It's nailed on! Didn't you get the memo? 🤣

Maybe, although obviously there's no guarantee of that and if the £80kpw from Everton is real then that's more or less there for him now. I think it's probably simpler than that, he doesn't trust Lage until he proves otherwise
My point just being there’s no rush for him and I don’t think him not signing is saying he “absolutely doesn’t want to stay”. He can wait to see how he’s used, how the club is performing, direction of travel. Obviously him flopping won’t be a consideration as he will have full belief in his ability, so there is nothing to lose waiting and lots to gain.

I don't think anybody can blame him for wanting to give it time to see if he's actually going to be a big part of the team, rather than signing and hoping the talk actually materialises.

There isn't room for pretending we played like Brazil 1970 last August when we obviously didn't, no.

We really weren't that good :D

Deserved a point at Leicester. Though they had plenty of chances first half and could have been away and clear. That wasn't even as good a display as when we lost there at the start of 2018/19.

Dodgy as fuck penalty for them for sure but we didn't create huge amounts vs Spurs. Not convinced Lloris made a proper save in the second half.

Should have beaten United and handsomely, of course. As it turns out they were an awful team, so meh.

Adama hitting a 1v1 straight at him was in the second half wor it?

I think we were decent to watch but it's often exaggerated how good due to the boring nature of our performances either side of that 3 game span.

That's not what I said though.
I know, just didn’t write what I meant very well. Him not signing doesn’t mean he doesn’t absolutely want to be here (think that makes sense with the triple negative, which is what I was trying to get at), and my point regarding that still stands.

I take it back then if he got some assists in a meaningless friendly
You mean his performance against Shrewsbury in a pre-season friendly doesn't mean anything?

How very dare you...

Should we be worried there’s lots of footage of Donk being put through on goal and practicing his shooting?

I don't know if we watched through different lenses, or if the truth lies somewhere in the middle*, but my memory of those games is that we were so, so good

*by middle I mean I'm at least 60% right, of course

Lots of cut backs suggests we’re sticking with that plan but might actually have more than one person to aim at. Also MGW and Podence linking together with Campbell on the other side suggesting a 4231. Hwang was also used as a CF.

Donck and Ronan getting into advanced positions suggests a midfield 3 though. Particularly when MGW and Podence were interchanging in that drill.

First half against Leicester we were pretty awful, though should have scored on the break when Adama missed the one on one. Decent second half but not amazing, struggled to create too much.

Spurs game some good football but again missed the one big chance we had. Struggled to create much more.

Battered United but missed some really good chances.

The clip from the Collins video of the formations on the wall is about other team's formations in the Prem, not us.
