Norwich 3 v Wolves 1 - not the game we wanted verdict thread

Ultimately it wouldn't have happened if the ref had been any good - the ban should be transferred to the ref

Heat of the moment you don't think though do you. Easy for us to sit here and say he shouldn't have done anything after the player conned the ref but that snap second when the ref mist came down he wouldn't have taken a second to think his actions through.

I will be amazed if we appeal and if we do, I will be amazed if it is won.

I would say a lot of us have played football where something similar has happened though, yes not in a professional league but it still pisses you off and you have to keep your emotions in check. Tough to do but he's more than capable of doing that and the best way to get back at Hoolahan was to save the pen.

I always failed on that point...

But when you don't think a push is a red card there's nothing to really think about!

I'd be disappointed if we didn't appeal and disappointed if it didnt get overturned. Say all you like about interpretation, it's the wrong interpretation and will be overturned. Unless the referee is a special case like Atwell where they are deliberately protecting him.

There is history of shoves getting overturned, and if Feghoulis got overturned then this definitely will!

:icon_lol::icon_lol: no wonder you're backing him up.

Only 1 red card in 20 years though.....and that was for giving the player a gentle smack across his chops as he had the nerve to get arsey at me after I had just hacked him down because he was a tad quicker than me...

anyway, Ikeme was an arse but it happens. Gives young Harry the chance to play in a huge game though.

It won't

Stearman was our man of the match for me, though I've not seen the highlights. Some excellent challenges and headers, always covering and excellent pace whenever Doherty was out of position (which was quite a lot, though he played pretty well the rest of the time).

Mason was anonymous and should have been hooked earlier. Cav was pretty poor although he and Doherty were probably our biggest threat in the first half with some great triangles - but too many times he slowed it down and then lost it, I would say he was hooked for not bothering defensively though, just trotted back even when the ball was being held up around our left back area - really irritating.

Edwards didn't have a good game when he was deep, his positioning was terrible but had a couple of good interceptions and tackles high up - price was really good defensively but his longer passing was poor. Good short distribution though.

Defensively we looked alright until the sending off (bar the goal obviously) except for an awful back pass from batth that ikeme bailed him out of.

Overall I felt that once we equalised that we were in the driving seat so the red card and penalty were really disappointing, we were never in it after that.

I'd agree that Stearman was MOM, but you know when that's the case the overall organisation of the back four is usually poor. I thought that was how it was today, with Stears diving in to cover a number of times. On the other hand Price and Edwards were fairly solid defensively in front of them in the first half. However, Norwich pressured us on the ball in our own half leading to a number of sloppy passes and a few dodgy moments. We tended to prefer the left hand side and although Cav and Doherty made progress, I don't remember a single cross - Cavaleiro dallied as usual and Doc was always forced onto his left foot, which is next to useless.

Second half PQ has it about right. I thought our penalty would have been easy not to give and after that the ref was looking to even it up. After their pen, he got even worse although the whole game had descended into farce by then. Bod worked hard, and our most promising moves came when him, Mason and Weimann combined. I was surprised Bod and Mason were taken off as early as they were - and in hindsight that was a bad decision. Weimann looked very quick, though he ended up at wing back when we went three at the back after the pen, Enobakhare made no impression at all.

Conversely, I didn't think Stearman got a head on the rebound for the goal, so all that could be complete rubbish.

I don't really think we've learned anything from this game.

Our defence is still un-organised and Doherty is still better going forward then he is defending based on the highlights and what I've read about the game.

I'd be looking for Williamson + Saiss (when he returns) to be establishing a partnership at CB which should be more than good enough for this division. We still need a new left back - I think Silvio is out until March with a broken foot and in all honesty I don't think we'll seem him play for Wolves again even though it I would like him too!

I think Price + Evans is the partnership we need in midfield, if Edwards doesn't score he doesn't really bring anything apart from running which frankly all players should be able to deliver. I believe Williamson + Saiss with Price and Evans in front of them is more than enough for a "core" in this division.

Stearman made some last ditch blocks, as he does but he has made two poor headers that led to the first two goals and has to be part culpable for our chaotic defending at times so to say he was our best player is stretching it a bit.

He did - but I do wish wolves (and Paul lambert) had made more of it. I hate the diving and cheating and feel people who behave that way should be publicly shamed afterwards.

Maybe I'm just old but it's not football.

Justify it all you like Carl, you did let us down.

I quite like the fact he's come out with that. I don't see it as him attempting to "justify" it. More showing his frustration at a fellow professional clearly cheating.

It needs stamping out of the game and the only way that will happen is if it's highlighted when it happens.

Spot on from Ikeme, we all shouldn't have to put up with out and out cheating or bent / incompetent refereeing.

Agreed. The problem is that cheating and diving have become an accepted part of the modern game. It needed stamping out years ago, but it has been allowed to fester. And sadly I am not convinced that the authorities have the necessary resolve to do anything about it.

Don't the Scottish FA now punish diving? Incidents reviewed after the game and if a player is deemed to have dived they are given bans/fines?

I've only had chance to see the highlights off Sky and Ch5, which are both the same, so couldn't see clearly what happened for the pen/sending off.

The reaction of the Wolves players' was plain to see, they thought Hoolihan dived for the pen. and fell over easily from the push, but as others have said, Ikeme was naive in his reaction as he gave the referee little option but to use a card.

So now we have the situation I feared, with Ikeme unavailable for 3 games and Lonergan apparently not fully fit. Harry Burgoyne may be capable of holding the fort, but we would have a 20 year old, inexperienced goalkeeper helping to run the defence.

So far we have not regretted obtaining a quality keeper and a quality CB since Lambert arrived and I hope that continues, but we are still taking a huge gamble IMO. We are only 7pts above the relegation zone and will have to be careful we don't lose too many points.
